Exclamation Frets buzz on Fender acoustic...

One of my friends wants to learn a guitar and asked me to look for one under a hundred bucks.
Found a Fender 140S in great cosmetic condition and got it.
Met in the parking lot and it was out of tune so didn't get chance to test it.
After tuning, it buzzes after 5th fret.
I adjusted the truss rod but still buzzes.
Even added shim under the high side of the bridge. That helped some but still buzzes after 9th fret.
What else to check?

It could be a backbowed neck, or it could be a couple high frets. I've easy way to check is if you got a razor blade (for scraping paint or utility knives) you could go down the neck and see if it rocks on any of the frets.

If none rock, it could need a truss rod adjustment

Like every guitar - get it set up by a good tech/luthier and you will likely be astounded on the difference.

Thumbs up The fret buzz was due to...

lack of humidity.
After going through two dozen guitars, this is the first one that had this effect due to dry wood.
After putting few wet towels in hard case for few days, the neck became straight/er.
Looks like the neck wood in this guitar is different than others and lack of humidity changed it's angle.
It's still going through the wet towel treatment until it stabilizes.

Buzzing that high up on the neck is indicative of an excessively bowed neck, or a rise in the fretboard over the body. The latter cannot be adjusted out with the truss rod. It will require fretboard planing, or at the very least, milling of the frets.
A backbowed neck causes buzzing near the nut.
