Laminated back and sides from 1956 until Bozeman started making them in 1989, if I remember correctly.

I played a SJ-200 again the other day. I'm sure there are larger guitars but man, it's like trying to play a couch.

John Hiatt plays an early 90s J-200.

Thanks for the info! Wow, so it's had laminated back and sides for quite a while, interesting.

Default J-200 players

I have a great early 1990s J-200, my favorite of all my acoustics. Other famous players who have used them would be Gram Parsons, Brownie McGhee, John Hiatt, Chris Hillman, Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), Greg Lake, Lennon and Harrison.

I was going to wait but this thread revival seems a good place to announce ...

... new 2020 Gibson Custom Shop Historic Series 1957 SJ-200 in Vintage Sunburst ordered 3 weeks ago.

ETA 4 to 6 months .. could even be more.

Similar to the 2016 Limited Edition 1957 SJ-200 - new 2020 version has thermally aged Sitka Spruce top, the 2016 version was thermally aged Adirondack.
New 2020 model includes a 'period correct' hard case.

Welcome to the AGF.
I see there is an ex-Greg Lake SJ-200 currently listed on Reverb.

Rhett Miller of the Old 97s has played one to great effect almost exclusively for a number of years now. I once asked him how he came by it, he said Gibson sent them out to him and a number of other folks. Must be nice!

I believe it is an outstanding guitar.
I have the ‘57 Reissue, and it’s figured maple back and side (non laminate), with the baked Adi top. Some folks believe that back/side laminate can be as good as straight wood and that tone has more to do with construction shape, bracing and the top wood.

I think that model is mostly the same as following years’ True Vintage models with the torrefied tops, but not sure. It’s the epitome of a Gibson acoustic. I would like to find the equivalent J-45.

Here it is https://www.gibson.com/Guitar/ACCFN1...ntage-Sunburst

The Original Workhorse
The allure and legend of the Gibson J-45 lives on in the new Custom Historic 1942 Banner J-45. Inspired by the holy grail of vintage acoustic instruments, luthiers in Montana meticulously crafted a J-45 just like the most popular and celebrated version in structure and components. The new 1942 Banner J-45 includes a Thermally Aged Adirondack red spruce top hand-sprayed with a historic-style burst, hot hide glue top bracing for better tonal response, and a bone nut and saddle.

p.s. I sent you a PM today.
