Default Back purfling ideas.

Ideas for back purfling? I put it in another thread about "closing the box".

But wanted to now ask more directly. My plan is to make a DIY Clapton 000-28

Herringbone top. Check!

Errors to the back make a plain white binding (which is all a 000 has) problematic.

I did not want to just have herringbone on the back as well.

With examples, can any of you talk me out of that or other examples of things you've used. Or true "earn a living" pros on here have used, or of course any of the big boys have used?

My issues are covering some patchwork done to the back at the bottom of the lower bout. This made the back plates fit rims that were not secured well enough in gluing and drying. I basically have a "Jumbo 000". I WILL use white binding, but it needs some purfling to her up like make up. She's still gonna look rough, but hoping to make her structurally sound and more pleasing lower bout. Even in middle age don't we all find ourselves looking at pleasing lower bouts.

That is a back CENTER strip only.

To my knowledge and a brief google image search it only has white binding on the back edges.

I invite being proven wrong though. Would make life easier.

How wide is the problem area that needs to be covered by purfling?

The Clapton 000-28 has black/white/black purfling on the back as do other Martin models.

Guild has used four layer black/white/black/white purfling against white binding and rosewood back and sides and it looks quite good. (D-55)

That's pretty wide. At 4 mm, assuming your binding is about 0.080" thick you need about 0.080" of total purfling width which you could get from black/white/black/white with each layer 0.020" thick. (StewMac sells such purfling)

At 5 mm, you would need purfling about 0.120" wide total. One option would be to do black/black/white/white/black/black with each individual purfling layer 0.020" thick. You would be doubled up on the black and white layers but it might look just fine.

EDIT: I'm assuming for the above ideas that the 4-5 mm issue is measured in from the side without binding installed.

Correct. 4-5mm coverage needed from outer edge in. This would be total. Inclusive of binding.
