Beautiful rim. Very nice work on the lining. Everything fits, no gaps. Great stuff

You are absolutely right! Looking great. That Ziricote is going to really pop under finish.

Apologies, in post #45 I obviously should have said the lining was going on the back rim, not the top.

Just a couple of pictures today. At this point, pockets of the linng are being cut to fit the braces perfectly, and the redwood marriage strip on the inside back is being trimmed to fit the blocks perfectly. This is a shot of an intermediate stage where fit is being tested and fine tuned:
Another opportunity to look at that exquisite ziricote. And finally, here's the back "sitting easy" on the linings, as Steve put it. |

Doesn't it just! I've seen the sets and now I've seen the pictures many times. It still stops me in my tracks.
I'm planning to visit it in person on Monday. |

OK, now for the sides. Here's some side braces going in. I'm told that the principal purpose of the side braces is to stop the spread of any cracks that may happen to to the sides. Steve told me an anecdote about a repair they did on a guitar with no side braces that was split from the neck block to the heel block by a sharp tap against a table. I suppose that bracing also tends to stiffen the sides, the better to keep the energy in the top.
Trimming the ends of the side braces. Obviously this is done after the braces are glued in. I would have thought it would be easier to do it beforehand. There's probably some good reason for it. Finished braces along the cutaway side. Steve tells me he's putting two more in, on either side of the heel block. You can see the pockets for the back braces. The ziricote, Honduran mahagony, and sitka make a stunning color combination. I'll have to put a light inside so I can see better looking into the port. An advantage of getting all these pictures is that the craftsmanship and attention to detail going into this guitar are in evidence. I've commissioned one guitar before this, and it is superb, but I really didn't have more than the vaguest clue of how it was being done from the pictures I got. |

Love the sculpture work on the side braces. Almost look like mini pyramid bridges. And I certainly agree with you. A build with many pictures is so enjoyable and teaches us about all those things we will never see again.

The only true reason for the side braces and contouring is that Ryan LOVES to do it and Steve doesn't want to take away his joy he gets from doing that particular job. (I may have too much knowledge of the Kinnaird west shop for my own good).

Ziricote is probably my favorite wood. A killer piece is absolutely visually stunning to my eyes.

Nearly every step you've seen here falls into Ryan's orbit of duties. However, I've done the bulk of this, since he has been tending other fires. So, I got to do these side braces, as well as carve them. It WAS a joy! Quote:
It's a lot like Koa that way: it sells itself. Thanks all for looking, Steve |

I have been watching this build with interest, as I watch every build by the Kinnaird family. However, I am reserving my WOWs for the finished Ziricote which I imagine will be truly amazing. This is some very unusual Ziricote.

Steve had a visitor hanging around taking up his time yesterday. Something about buying a 12 string.
And yet he managed to get those last two braces installed and carved. (He said "we", so I presume Ryan was there too.) |
