Thanks, I pretty much have decided to go for one of the Sigma's. I guess I was just hoping someone could give me reason to go for the martin instead!
So now the desicion of solid or laminate! I can't get hold of a solid sigma to try out, so any more opinions on either sigma model would be appreciated.

They are both pretty similar. The solid is just a little more open sounding. That's just my opinion

Solid, I think long-term the sound would open up better..

I was looking at a few of the online stores such as guitarguitar or Andertons, but found a store local to me that has the guitars in stock, they can get the solid one in too, but they need 25% deposit upfront before they'll order it in. They will match the other online prices pretty much.

I own a rather lovely limited top of the range all solid sigma (see signature) and it is a fantastic guitar! It holds it own with my "far better" guitars and I have been really impressed by the revamped sigma range (especially the several all solid models they make).

The laminate 15 series sigma is a really great guitar and better value and quality than the 000rs1 (still a decent sounding guitar) to my ears but the all solid version is really in a different league and compares very favourably with Martin's 15 series (personally i believe they are every bit as good as the current Martin 15 series). If brand name matters to you i would go for the Martin, if you want more VFM and richer tone go for the all solid sigma.

Default Martin 000-15 or Sigma 000-15M

I have both of these - and I also prefer the Sigma! I even prefer the Sigma neck! I have played the Sigma S00015M (all solid) and agree with the points made above - it sounded a little more open than the laminate 00015M to me, perhaps a slightly brighter(?) guitar, but that´s just IMO.....

I was lucky enough to have all these guitars to play side by side in one sitting, so that also helped!

Hope my advice helps a bit....

Geoff

I think this 12 fret slotted headstock model looks interesting:

I can't seem to find any all solid wood guitars in the 15 series.

They definitely used to make an all solid one.

This is the one I play.
I don't want to go in the "this one is better than that one" trap.
My opinion is that, when I play this guitar, I like very much what I feel and hear.
And I payed it 450 CAN, taxes included. Now we are talking.

As an aside, I actually prefer laminate back and sides, makes for sturdier instruments. I don't want to care too much about the instrument when gigging. I have to focus on the music. I love resonators too, not only for that reason, but then...
Actually, my music is not significantly better with a significantly better instrument. So I'm happy with a good, well-made, ergonomically appropriate, and cheap guitar. This Sigma one is a nice example.
There are players that think differently, and they are right too.

Hi Jpbat,

I'm all nostalgic now for my little Sigma wishing I still owned it. I only got about £150 resale for it which means nothing to me but my wife doesn't like me having too many acoustic guitar cases hanging around so I let it go when I bought my Yamaha AC3M.

I always fancied trying a 12 fret 000 with 1 3/4 nut so that could be my next guitar. Thanks for the recommendation and I like your cool attitude about guitars.

Hhmmmm, I've not tried a 12 fret guitar before, but it looks nice. Dies it make much difference in sound?

Hi Dansrockin,

Listen to this guy playing the 12 fret Sigma it sounds very sweet for a £335 guitar. Once he gets going after a minute or so.

I quite fancy one myself. If you are into finger picking I think the 12 fret might suit you better due to the comfort, tone and wider string spacing at the nut.

That is a good price at gak, but I'm after a smaller bodied guitar. I had a dreadnaught before, but didn't get on with the size.

Well, it sounds sweet but there is a magnetic PU and amp involved, beside the acoustic sound.
That said, the guitar sounds sweet even without the amp added.
