Default For those who fancy Maple

Though I didn't set out on this track, I have ended up with to outstanding maple guitars-- a 6 and a 12 string. Before now, I thought maple instruments were simply for plugging it between your favorite rosewood or mahogany instruments. Now I have developed a new respect for this tone wood. Actually, starting to think of myself as a "Maple Guy".

Would love to hear other opinions, pro or con.

Frank

I really think most of the 'sound' of a guitar comes from how it was built, and the techniques of the builder more so than the wood. IMO.

I've got a maple Guild F55 that I adore... It sounds so nice and balanced. I also believe the un-braced laminated back is partially responsible for its amazing sound. I also have an '87 Taylor 610 that sounds particularly nice finger picked. I'm fortunate to have all the major "Food Groups" covered guitar tonewood wise.

I have a 2006 Taylor GS6 that is 'big leaf maple' b/s and spruce top. It's old enough to have opened up so has some good bass response and just shimmers on the top end. I recall when playing it before buying thinking it sounded almost like a 12 string all by itself. I've referred to it as a 'poor mans J200" though it wasn't especially inexpensive!

I have heard many great Maple guitars. Unfortunately, I've never found one I would keep or own. My rule on Maple guitars is the same position I have with Koa, I would never buy one without playing it first because they can vary so much from one guitar to another.

My J200 has a beautiful tone, top to bottom. It is a special J200, as I have played quite a few of them, and though all were very good, this one is great.

A friend of mine has a late 70’s Guild G37 with maple back and sides, and that guitar sounds wonderful. I gravitate to it every time I’m at his house. It’s a great guitar.

I’ve always liked maple.

But would you agree it could/should be easier?

Beautiful guitar!

In the right hands, Maple is a fabulous tone wood…..Your Santa Cruz Maple 12 string sounds like a band of angels!

I've had three maple b&s acoustic guitars, a Santa Cruz F (German spruce top), a Webber OM (Red Western Cedar top), and a Webber Roundbody (Sitka top - which I still have). I have liked each quite a bit.

I own a 1982 Ibanez M330. All maple, top, sides and back. Definitely sounds different than a spruce top but I liked it. I've owned it for 42 years.
