There are many advantages to playing in-sync with the sequencer in Garage Band not least that it gives you a more solid feel, assuming you can play along with an external tempo source.

Mainly because I don’t really know how to use all the features in Garage Band yet. But this sound like something I should figure out.

Ya that will definitely push it back in mix, cause the mic was just trying to do what you had set it up to do
It's Ok just all part of the learning curve
That will make a big difference nex time out, in fact I would go ahead and try another session where you sing and play at the same time

So this makes me wonder are you using a set of headphones plugged into your interface while tracking ? because that will also make a big difference in being able to really tell what is going on

Ya no I understood that, I was curious because he said he sang right into the mic, which still did not jive with it being so far back in the mix. But the wrong side of mic explains it ..

All he said was an LDC, which should be much more intimate once turned correctly.

I am. And I wondered why the mic sounded so quiet through them.

An Audio-Technica AT2020.

Thanks everyone for weighing in. This subforum is like a master class. Much appreciated. I'll do my best to apply all the suggestions here, and I'll post a second attempt in this thread.
