Is it worth selling just a hardshell case?
A Les Paul Original hardshell case on the website goes for $199. I am thinking of getting rid of it but thinking it might de-value my guitar if I ever sell or trade it in the future.
My LP is currently inside a Mainstage Case, which is basically Canada's version of Calton. Do you guys think it would be severely undervalued without its original case? If you were the buyer, would it be a deal breaker if it came in Mainstage Case? |

If it's "just" a standard Les Paul then you can do without the case. I'd keep the case if it was an historic or limited edition Les Paul just so you can say "all original".
If you sold the Les Paul without the case then it would just take the hit of the cost of a case. I myself would be curious and perhaps suspicious as to why someone was selling a Les Paul without the case but you have a good reason, you just need to be clear when selling. If it were me, I'd welcome saving some $ on a used Les Paul without a case because I already have many Les Paul cases. Someone who is buying their first Les Paul will want the case. |

You're looking at this the wrong way. You now have an extra case, so you need to buy another Les Paul to put in it. Problem solved.

With a modern case, no vintage value...no. Cases are relatively worthless. So, a waste of time and (if you have to ship it) money. I live in southern CA. The market here for a used original hard case of any make or quality maxes out at about $50 on Craigslist, Offer Up, a pawnshop, or a street sale. People ask for $100-$200, and they generally get $50 or less. If it's a fairly rare vintage case and you and the buyer know the value, or if you need the storage space, then maybe a local personal sale (no tax, no shipping). |

is it the brown case w/shroud?
My 95 standards case is fairly well traded, in other words, kind beat up by now.

I tried selling a martin case separate from one of the Mexican made 000s. And swore I would never do it again. I was able to sell it, but not without some difficulty. Cases by themselves are almost worthless. They can help sell a guitar, I think, but you don't really get anything additional for the guitar if it has a hard case.

Just “mho” of course, but if you have the space and foresee yourself ever selling or trading the guitar, I’d keep the original case for the specific purpose of selling and shipping the guitar. Then re-sell the better case, especially if it’s a nice one, to someone looking for the same upgrade you made.
Or, you could sell the guitar “with an upcharge for the upgraded case”, and see what you could get locally, craigslist etc. for the original issue. Or……you could find another LP……..as stated above….. 😊 |

I would hang onto it. Might come in handy if you get another LP, as suggested earlier.
I just consigned a Martin dreadnought with the original black ABS case and an insulated climate case cover made just for the Martin case… |

I guess I'll hang to it for now. Don't want another LP shaped guitar but I guess it could come handy in the future if I ever sell or trade this guitar.

I would never get rid of the original case for a Gibson Les Paul.

I would be suspicious that a guitar for sale without its case was stolen.

Good point, or a fake.
