Default String Alloy/Material

So I have read bits and pieces here and there, but haven't been able to get a very comprehensive view. I bought a new Yamaha A3R this spring and I love the guitar but decided to spend some time and money figuring out what strings sound the absolute best. Also have a couple other guitars that might benefit from different strings.

So I started this experiment and the realized how expensive this can be. Also time is a factor as most strings take 3-5 days to break in and some take even longer.

I know all strings are different, but are there some generalizations that can be made? Such as:

1. Alloy, 80/20 vs phosphor bronze or the few in-between concauctions, nikle bronze?
2. round core vs hex
3. flat wound? or Newtone double wounds
