Default Why Are Insurance Company Commercials So Stupid ?

You'd think they would want to appear smart, dependable, caring, "A Rock", and such.

Now they look like they are being run by Vinnie Barbarino.

You're excused if you don't remember Vinnie Barbarino….

They're to get your attention and to associate their name with the product. Apparently they work, not only because they got your attention and mine, but because after all these years of running them the companies are still doing so.

I would always turn the channel during commercials but those Geico Caveman commercials made me watch it. So, guessing it captivates people's attention.

Talking about coverages, deductibles and exclusions would bore people to tears, plus it would be tough to do in 30 seconds.

Running funny/corny stuff gets people to remember the company name, and include said company in their short list when they go insurance shopping.

Idiocracy hit the nail on the head - although it's happening much quicker than predicted.

While some commercials are still quite clever, the troubling and perhaps scary news is sevargnhoj may be spot on .... Advertising is now well researched to target the "demographic audience " in a high enough percentage to effect sales . For example one need only look at they way news is now presented, to get the gist of what is going on marketing wise. Just like sex, fear sells, and apparently stupid does also......

Love the "Mayhem" commercials from Allstate. Some of the GEICOs are pretty funny too (Stephon Diggs catches everything!).

I hold an association from them, and that's what you ask for from advertising.

That reminds me Marty, my grandkids have never seen that movie. I know what we are doing next time they come over!

Ha! I watched it with my kids recently and, fortunately, they got the message. I don't know if you've seen it, but there's a great Steve Hughes clip on YouTube entitled, 'Eat your........' (I'll leave that blank!)...well worth a look if not seen already.

Those are what influenced this thread.

Moronic is a perfect word.

I guess they want to draw attention away from the fact it's probably the only business you have to pay outrageous premiums, with the hopes you never have to use the product.

The whole business is so regulated that most of the basic products are identical. There's not a whole lot the individual companies have to offer so they try to create catchy "personalities" to draw you.

Bottom line.

There is a style where they "interview" "real people" at the movie theater (who always rave about what they just saw). I read somewhere that those type of commercials are the kiss of death for a movie.

Either those commercials turn people off so much that the movies bomb, or the movie is doing so poorly they use a low-budget last digit effort to advertise it (cause or effect?).

I can't stand that whole type of commercial (I don't know if you call commercial types a genre or a type or a style.)

They are inane drivel and usually just point out really bad salesmanship.

I still remember they ran one for a Ford in high rotation and the high point was a "real person" being amazed she could say "call hubby".....so, the top feature you have to brag about is voice dialing that every kid had since grade school?

Now, it's Chevy with those secret commercials where they surprise "real people" with a Chevy to look at. I cringe so bad at these and I can't believe they are still on the air. I do not buy the argument that "they must be working" - I think they simply are unwilling to acknowledge their ad agency is a failure and are sticking with it.
