Mics for iphone. Opinions?
I am looking for a Lightning connector microphone like the Shure MV88, Rode iXY-L, Zoom iq7, etc., for use almost exclusively in capturing good acoustic guitar sound. Has anyone here had a chance to compare two or more of these iphone mics?

I picked up the MV88 last summer just to play with. I was very pleased to find that it exceeded my expectations. i actually like it quite a bit for what it is.
I have no experience with the Rode, but considered it when I made my purchase. I went with the Shure based on reviews at several sites. I think it sounds quite good on acoustic guitar. There's a compression thing that happens with it that is really flattering.

I have the MV88. It works pretty well; however, I have a pretty good large condenser that sounds better, even through a $39 IRIG interface. That’s not meant to be negative because the MV88 is small, easy to set up, and sounds decent, much better than the phone mic.

Thanks for the replies. Do you have to use the MV88 app, or can you record using any recording app?

Believe it will work with any app that will work on the phone. I’ve used the Motiv software and GarageBand. Actually, I like the Motiv but it is limited in effects, etc. .
I think the Motiv has software for the mid-side recording if you want to try that. But, I really didn’t try it. The mic might have sounded even better. Hope someone with better advice posts. |

I’ve got the even cheaper Shure MV5. Works fantastically well with GarageBand on my iPad / iPhone for recording acoustic guitar and vocals. Very happy

I've heard some good recording with the Shure MV88. I have a Blue Yeti, and although I haven't tried it personally, yet, a friend has been plugging it directly into his iPhone (via lightning to USB adapter) and recording in GarageBand.

It will work with any app. But the MOTIV app gives you access to all the mic's internal settings (like XY, MS, mono, gain). I'd grab the app even for that...then those settings stick in whatever other app you use to record (like GarageBand).

I got a IK iRig Mic Studio - it’s a large-diaphragm condenser mic that plugs directly into an iPad or iPhone, and I’ve found it quite good for recording both acoustic guitar and voice. It’s nice not having to deal with a separate interface.

This is a recording using the Shure MV5 plugged directly into my iPad and using the GarageBand app. Apologies for the dodgy vocals

I picked up an Apogee Mic+ a couple of days ago. Plugs directly into Macs, iPads, and iPhones. Tried a couple of quick recordings yesterday. So far very impressed. Here’s a quick video done on my MacBook Air. Just plugged in the mic and recorded in QuickTime. Didn’t change anything from the default settings.

Rather than buy a mic for the iPhone, I bought this adapter that lets me use any dynamic mic I already have, such as the Shure 57's, 58's Telfunken M80.
It has a TRRS connector for the iPhone and goes to a female XLR connector and headphone jack. You can get them at Amazon..... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm planning on using the Telefunken M80 for recording as it gives a nice crisp clear sound. I just ordered the adapter tonight, so I don't have any samples for you. The mic on my iPhone 6 Plus doesn't sound too bad....I do have a sample of that here...… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPMr...GxYWiv8snDmQjw
