Default recommend a safe audio converter?

Would like to convert MPEG-4 files (the only kind my computer's voice recorder can output) to Mp3. Not entirely happy just installing some random free program from the internet though. Any recommendations?

+1 for dbpoweramp. You have all kinds of options to control the precise quality of conversion for both audio and video.

They also make a great audio format converter.

edit: I saw MP4 and immediately assumed video. I've converted many thousands of files flawlessly with the audio converter. Great for batch processing.

Another dBpoweramp vote. I got it so long ago I cannot remember, and there's still a copy running on an old (Vista era) Win7 notebook that gets fired up in rare instances.

I probably could even still "upgrade" to an OS X version, but I have a free converter there that covers the limited bit of that I do, since I generally just bounce/export in whatever format I need from the other audio apps I use.

I use the Universal Audio Video Converter. There is a system of automatic detection of the type of device on which the conversion will be performed, making it much easier to set up

File conversion is one of VLC's hidden superpowers. Worth exploring to see if it meets your needs.

Also - Cockos Reaper imports every audio or video file I've thrown at it and exports likewise.

What kind of computer? Maybe we could recommend voice recorder apps and save you a step.
