Gibson L-0/L-1...
a while back I started a thread on Nick Lucas style guitars. The response to that thread taught me that Gibson had originally made the Nick Lucas in an L-0 or an L-1 configuration.
On this thread, I was wondering who among us knows of luthiers who make that style of guitar. It will be interesting to see what's out there. john

Isn't David Flammang's EL model roughly that shape?

Isn't John Mayes L-32 based on the Gibson L models? The Santa Cruz H and H=13 are also based on the L body style.

explanation...
What I am looking for are luthiers who are making guitars in the Gibson L1 "Robert Johnson" type. I cannot think of any other examples other than the original Nick Lucas versus the L-00 type most of us are aware of.
Maybe another way to explain - Mary Flower uses an L-00 gibson (not unlike the greven you had Dennis) and... One of the only pictures of Robert Johnson shows him holding an L-1 (or an L-0) Gibson It would be the latter guitar I am asking about. Clear as mud? john

thanks...
Howard you got it! I was just curious how other luthiers are interpreting this old Gibson body style.

Hi John,
The black EL Majestic I'm sitting with (on my front porch) is a shot my daughter Nicole took for my 'A Tale To Tell' CD. Although it was not an easy guitar for me to play due to its having a low profile neck (the 1 & 3/4" nut meant nothing), it recorded beautifully! The man who gave me the guitar was not aware that I'd already ordered exactly what I wanted from David, but I still enjoyed my time with the EL. It was a very comfortable body shape and size, though. I'd really like to play the current issue of Gibson "Robert Johnson" model. I have a 1930 L-1, which I love. I just wonder how the new issue sounds compared to the original.
Have you tried the Gibson Robert Johnson? f-d

I have an order for an original Nick Lucas shape (the "Robert Johnson" L-1). But it's going to be expanded to the 14-1/2" lower bout width of the later body style.

John,
Check out the Bay State guitars in the Fretfiles section of the latest Fretboard Journal. The Excelsior model in essentially the early Nick Lucas box. You can also find it at www.wellsguitars.com. I have one and love it. - Ken |
