My son played an Explorer on his youth P&W team before he hijacked my Flying V. It is my impression that you have to be at least six feet tall and lanky to play an Explorer or it emphasizes any little bit of fat on your body! I am not six feet tall.

Not by me...but my son has. I lead our rather large team and have multiple guitarist (including myself) so, I’ve seen some interesting guitars onstage. Mostly traditional, but there have been a few unlikely guitars that have shown up.
I drew the line when my son brought his fiancées HOT PINK (*including the fretboard) Strat style “shredder” onstage. It made it through sound check, then it went back to the COFFIN CASE. He’s progressed some and now plays a Kiesel Osiris. I’m good with that. Even though the lack of headstock still bugs me lol. Oh, and then there’s the “skinny jeans”. That’s a negative ghost rider.

I still remember the ugly stares when I showed up in the '70s and '80s with my Les Paul. Um, things have changed a wee bit.

In all seriousness, what about a guitar makes it acceptable (or not) in church?

I, too, recall a pink shred machine showing up one Sunday - we never saw it again. Also, when I got my Rickenbacker 650D, it had the stock mirror shiny pickguard on it - first time I played it in church, I was very aware that as I moved about, the lights were reflecting off it into the front rows, causing quite a distraction. I changed it out for a gold plastic one very soon afterwards... It's also completely unacceptable to show up with anything other than a Taylor or a McPherson, if you happen to be playing acoustic.

I thought the whole idea of having a band in a church service was to bring in more pre-elderly people and their money. Did I say money? I meant their lost souls.

Forum rules prevent any further substantive discussion along those lines, I suspect.

I had to read a few posts to understand what P&W was but I do now. I've never done that. I do have an Epi Explorer. One day I'd like to get the Gibson, something to match my white Gibson Flying V (try that at P&W).
Great pics! |
