Default Rainsong Vintage OM versus Martin 000-18

In case you're wondering if you can fool the normies with their wooden guitars:

Check out this shootout!

I see some other Rainsongs in the background... Makes me miss my trips to the music store!

Great comparison! For my ears (and within the confines of the video production), it was clearly in favor of the RainSong. Nice tone, projection, and sustain.

Wow. That RainSong stands up well in that comparison for me. If I had to choose based on that video alone (which would never be wise) it’s the RainSong.

The low E on that Martin was completely dead.

Otherwise, the Rainsong had the sort of metallic twang I associate with... my Rainsongs.

Based on this particular video alone I would give the Rainsong a landslide victory. However, that Martin 000-18 doesn't sound like the typical 000 that I'm used to, maybe the strings?

They both sound like pretty fine guitars to me - I’d agree that the strings on the Martin could have done with a refresh.

I find this kind of comparison pretty pointless, to be honest, unless you’re trying to prove a point to the ‘sounds like plastic’ crowd. They mostly won’t be swayed by anything.

Overall, I'll go with the RainSong Vintage OM

I go with the Martin. Much more balanced as I usually percieve a 000.
That being said both guitars need different strings in my opinion. Were the ones on the Martin old?

The Rainsong was too bright and jangly for me. Maybe they should use the Elixers that were shipped with my Rainsong. Or what were the strings?

To the poster referring to the "plastic sound", I can agree to that as I played one once and that was my description. Bought one anyway. Love the guitar!

If you like bright with clarity (and balance), the Rainsong wins hands down. The Martin sounded like a Martin to me with a deeper low end even though I agree the low E seemed asleep. Would be more valid if the test stated both guitars had the same strings and assume he used the same pick(s) on both. Seemed similar to a Taylor versus Martin comparison.

What I liked was that RainSong sounded as different from the Martin as two Martin models might, but still a peer of that Martin.

My A-B of my V-DR and my duo partner's HD-28V, even though my V-DR had fresh coated 11s and the Martin had fresh uncoated 12s, was the RainSong is completely competitive and something I like better. It even impressed my Martin loving duo partner.

I would go for the Martin based on this video, not a big fan of the tonal balance of the Rainsong.

I played an 000-18 recently and was planning to get one. Then RainSong announced the Vintage series. I received my Vintage OM yesterday. I love it. And, it's going to live on my wall, not in its' case.

In the comparison video the 2 guitars look like they were separated at birth.

I think both guitars sounded great...I think the Martin had a little more in the way of mids, which helped warm it up. But, I'd go with the Rainsong.

One thing that helps the RainSong in this 'fight' is that it is a 12 fretter. I have an RS Shorty, which is this particular model only with the black carbon top. It is one of the reasons why I'll always own it. It has a very 'wood' like tone to it. I would love to get this Vintage version, but can't really justify the cost of a visual upgrade.

Both guitars are nice, but I'm glad I have the RS.
