The Canna Guitar
Have we already had a thread about this? I didn't do a search.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i60JmnOtsX4&loop=0 Note the way the open-center headstock positions the tuning pegs, relative to nut position of string. Shouldn't all guitars be this way? I know, we can get the same effect if all our acoustics had Tele heads, but look at the Canna, and . . . . . . drool.

I'd worry that the strings would slip off the posts with that kind of angle. Nice that they come of the nut straight, but still... I'd worry. Despite this worry, I like the way this looks.
Putting the soundhole where the cutaway would be is a sound idea (pardon the pun). Kills two birds with one stone and does not alter the guitar's shape like a real cutaway would. Though I have suspicions, I have no clue how it sounds to the player that way, but either way a soundport would rectify that. The pick guard, if that's what you want to call it, is WAY too thick and does no good other than provide a pinky rest for the player, which he uses. Not everyone would need that. The styling is not my cup of tea but will appeal to many who like a modern look. Loved the playing (which is my cup of tea) and how it sounded in general. but felt the bass lacked enough presence. Still, it's nice to see builders thinking outside the box.

I like the aesthetics. I've seen enough 'traditional' designs to fill a few lifetimes.
Love the cutaway+sound port, though it seems like it would broadcast to the audience more than the player. I was expecting a richer tone, and was surprised at the extremely fundamental sound. Great that there are luthiers pushing the envelope and slowly moving chauvinistic guitarists into the future!

Casimi Guitars has been building guitars wit this type of head stock for a number of years. And they sound very beautiful. The price however is on the top, of the top end guitars pricing. Our very own AGF member, Michael Watts is having a Casimi Guitar built for himself right now. And if it is good enough for Michael, well then that speaks mountains by itself. Now all I have to do is sell my house to afford one. ha ha. But boy, beautiful tones. Here is his build thread.https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=631322 |

If you watch the video and listen to Carl describe things, you'll see two more unique elements:
The top is a three-ply assembly of spruce-mat-spruce, the mat being some kind of woven scrim, maybe carbon fiber. Built-up thickness of the top about the same as on, say, a Martin adi spruce. The back, a composite material made with fibers from something other than wood (rice?), the binder unknown, is sprayed onto a form and then released after cure, much like the way they do fiber-concrete sinks. It is glossy smooth and double-bellied, and Carl says it can slip (like an Ovation) so he uses a cloth towel under with some grab, and a footstool that elevates his knee. But aside from this, listen to it.

"Modern" guitars don't usually do a whole lot for me, because they're usually built to be sensitive and expressive with a lot of sustain and giant dynamics, all of which is not really what I look for in a guitar.
This one sounded really lovely to my ear. The looks still really aren't my thing, but it's definitely interesting to see this kind of guitar sound more like a Kalamazoo than a Somogyi. |

Sounds a little boxy to me. Unless that’s what they were going for.

You can find another discussion of these, one that is current, over in the Carbon Fiber section.

So I got Carl's tabs pages for the Kottke song, and am playing along with, through the lesson at 3/4 speed, and using my D-18.
My goodness, what a sound. This piece, in open whatever, is perfect for my D-18's mood today.
