Default Taylor guitar strings

Hi and thanks for your help in advance.

Getting a new Taylor 912ce builders in soon and it has elixers strings, not sure which ones the nano I assume.

I had a Martin 00028ec that had Daddario ej16 , I have never played the elixers

If I set up my guitar with daddario and decide to switch to same gage elixers will I need a new setup? Or vice versa?

I heard elixers are stiffer?

And also harder for bending?

Had anyone put dadario as in a Taylor and compared them? And also the sound?

Thanks so much, as guitar will be set up at sweetwater I want to decide on the strings.

Thanks so much

Play the Elixirs and see how you like them. They are less noisy then EJ16 and smoother to the touch and they last much longer. If you decide to switch to EJ16 no adjustments will be needed to your guitar.

Happy almost NGD!

I own two Taylor guitars and they both have D'Addario EJ16 strings on them. Sometimes I use EXP16 coated strings. No adjustments were necessary since I am using light gauge strings.

I agree with Dwight (play the Elixirs for a while) and Glenn (no adjustments or setup needed). On my 814ce DLX I'm currently using Martin Retro, Tony Rice, 13-56 Mediums and the only adjustment needed was a 1/8 turn on the truss rod.

Congratulations on your incoming 914!!!!

+1 to keeping the Elixirs on for a while.

Over the years with my Taylor, I've gone back and forth between Elixir phosphor bronze nanoweb strings and a handful of types of D'Addario strings in the same gauge (lights for me) with no noticeable difference as far as the guitar's playability is concerned. Any differences come in the tone and feel of the strings.

I actually have come to really like D'Addario strings on my Taylor — particularly their nickel bronze set. I feel like it brings out a bit of midrange warmth. I also like the tried and true EJ16s as well, particularly once they've been played a bit and aren't as zingy.

But Elixirs are great too and I think contribute to — for better or for worse — the signature "Taylor sound" (and feel) even if to a small degree.

Why not just try the strings on your new Taylor and see for yourself? The feel fine and are part of the Taylor sound.

I’m still waiting to get it and I’m having a setup done before they ship it to me
So hoping to make best decision I can. I was told by some people that the tension is different enough that it would be a different setup between the 2 brands, and if true I’m hoping to have best shot of not needing another setup, especially with low action.

Also would love to hear from other on the tone differences and feel.

Thx !

I play whole step bends with ease using my Elixir PB Lights. The stiffness is just right for me.

I think you'd find the playability, tone and life of the Elixir PB lights to be great. My recommendation would be to try them, you might like them. If not, changing them to other lights would be no big deal.

Some like Elixir's, Some don't. I'm in the don't category.

Then again, I've never been a big fan of Taylor either.

Could it be the strings? Maybe.
