1924 Gibson Mandolin on Antique Road Show
Apologies if this has been posted before. I was watching the Antiques Road Show a couple of nights ago and they re-aired this segment. The value blew me away.
Enjoy! The commercial unfortunately has to be played as well. Sorry. https://www.pbs.org/video/antiques-r...loar-mandolin/

I saw that Antiques Road Show segment. It's a wonderful show and usually features one musical instrument on each show.

Looking again, it was aired in 2012, and show the serial no: 76550 March 31st 1924, with virzi. I looked on he Mandolin Archive website and it is listed -I also read on there : Fern Loar, very nice condition. Appeared on the Antiques Roadshow, presented by Fred Oster of Vintage Instruments in Philadelphia, PA. Here's the PBS video from the Antiques Roadshow Unrelated to the "Antiques Roadshow" instrument, an f5 mandolin with this serial number was reported as stolen Sept 10 2007, from Grand Canyon, AZ. The authenticity of the claim was called into question. Obviously on TV progs like this they can't delve to much on history or condition, but I seem to remember that Loar era F5s were being "priced" at $250k a few short years ago. I see that George Gruhn has a 1924 flowerpot F5 (with Virzi intact) on consignment for $95k. I wonder where this one has gone - I doubt that the young lady's family will have put it back in the attic! ummm, just getting the loft ladder down!

Carter's Vintage had six Loars for sale last I looked ( a few days ago) , asking $125K ish. Five years ago they were up in that $175K region. Even the Holy Grail is not immune to the market. But $125K will buy you a solid pro orchestral violin. You need to go million plus to start to enter the upper end market.
So figuring Gruhn's probably has three or four, that's a buyer's market to me.
