Default Green Book wins best picture!!!

....in a rare instance the film I was pulling for takes best picture....a touching and poignant snapshot of a place and time that I remember well....I got to see it from both sides....I attended an all white high school the first day it was integrated with a handful of black students....and 2 years later I was among a dozen or so white students chosen to integrate an all black high school for the first time...the two experiences could not have been more different... I could write a book on it and may some day....

....if you have not seen Green Book go see it...it will show you what it looked like from both sides...and it will lift your heart up...

I was a freshman in high school the first year it integrated. In 1969! 15 years AFTER Brown v. Board of Education. It was very much a learning experience for one as sheltered as I had been (and did not realize). The Green Book is something I only learned about a couple of years ago. Hopefully it will open up some eyes. I had never stopped to think about the issues raised by the movie.

Haven't seen the film yet, but, from the trailers for it I deduced that it must have been about Don Shirley before his trio. Shirley was one of my Dad's favorites, and I've heard his work since I was a little boy in the mid-50's...

Looking forward to seeing this movie!

I haven't seen any of the Best Picture nominees, but have most of them queued up and ready to watch. I'm traveling internationally this week and next, so I might load up a couple of them on the iPad.

I heard a commentator on NPR ,who had written a book on the Green Book say that while the picture depicted the spirit of segregation correctly, it misappropriated 2 themes. Namely, that not all the hotels in the Green Book were bad and that the segregation depicted was sadly not limited to the deep south. It is a poignant movie.

I haven’t seen it yet. There has been criticism about it winning best picture.

...unfair criticism...not entirely true...first off the film depicted some dingy hotels but did not outright imply that they represented all the hotels listed in the Green Book....and the film definitely gave a clear picture of the racism and segregation that existed in New York at the time the tour was planned...but it was a film about the southern tour and the experiences that took place there...it did not address segregation in other regions but did not imply that it didn’t exist...

...I lived in the south at the time....if anything the film held back on the true realities of the time and the actualities were often more heinous than described in the film...

Criticism always comes out of the woodwork...it's usually just the opinion of someone who's unhappy that their personal choice didn't win...and some people are just unhappy that the world doesn't see everything the way they do...

My wife and I are both looking forward to viewing this film...

The situations and relationships portrayed in the film present unique perspectives on a very complicated life story which is challenging the sensibilities of just about everyone who sees it...as it should. Imo, those involved in the production handled it brilliantly which should advance compassion and understanding. I believe this is what contributed to earning it best movie. Well-deserved.

I think it's best to be wary when Hollywood claims "true life story". Members of Shirley's family have claimed that the central relationship is grossly misrepresented.
