Default Best luthiers in UK for a 000 12 fret build.

I live in London and would love to custom order a 000 12 fret with cutaway from one of the top US builders, but the import duty and tax situation is pushing prices out of reach for me. I'm looking for recommendations for luthiers based in the UK who excel at this style. Thanks!

Have you considered William Kelday? His 000-12 model is particularly renowned, having been played by Tony McManus for years.

Alex Bishop also makes a 000-12 under his "folk guitars" section. I've haven't played one of his models myself (yet).

Hey Nick, I see that you have a Matsuda. Why not add to the list with a Tom Sands?

Alternatively, a personal pick up via airplane in the USA would solve the tax issues!

For me the top two choices would be Tom Sands or, my preference, Taran guitars (Rory Dowling)

Check out this 12 fret 000 he just finished which was bought by Martin Simpson no less!

Ralph Bown makes a lovely guitar but I do wish he’d step into the 21st century and get a website... nothing fancy...just a cover page would do!

There are some great options about at the moment, i'll would suggest adding Turnstone Guitars (England), McGreevy Guitars (Northern Ireland) and Taran Guitars (Scotland) to the possibles list

Plus 3 on Taran, I have a build coming from Rory in about 12 months. Super excited and a great guy to work with. Michael Watts did a video and posted it in the custom shop with Rory if interested.

Sadly, I don't believe that Pat is making acoustics any more.

My 00-28 was built by Vince Hockey in Southampton, but that was twenty years ago, not sure he's still working.

Here's another idea : Phil Davidson :https://www.davidsoninstruments.com

In terms of trying before you buy there appears to be an active Tom Sands appreciation society over your way - see https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...=510378&page=2

Or do what I do from Australia – fly to the US and hand carry it back home.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. Much appreciated. There are a few there I'd not heard of. Taran do look amazing and I'm still trying to track down an email / number for Ralph Bown. It's like he's in witness protection, or something! Although Tom Sands is amazing, I'm drawn to something more traditional this time. Definitely one for the future though. A bit too much for my current budget too. Trying to keep to maximum between £5-6k.
I've played a few Atkins guitars recently and they were really good - but I then compared them to a couple of Collings and Bourgeois' that were next to them and they we're next level.
Turnstone are interesting, if not traditional. I met Rosie and played a few of hers at the UK Guitar Show. Very impressive.
Flying to the US to collect and carry home is food for though....
