Archtop builder Erich Solomon interviewed on NH TV
I posted about this in the general forum, but then realized that this might be of more interest to those of you build or play or simply appreciate fine handbuilt custom instruments.
For those of you familiar with the work of archtop guitar builder Erich Solomon, and even those of you who aren't, here's a clip of an interesting television interview he did on New Hampshire television: http://www.wmur.com/new-hampshire-ch...28/detail.html [Editor's note: As of today, March 15, I replaced the original link (which has ceased functioning) with the current link, which should still work. whm) I first met Erich when he was barely out of his teens here in Anchorage, Alaska, yet he was making superb instruments even then. The guitars he brought along on a visit back up here last August were even more impressive. Unlike most archtops I've played, they had marvelous sustain, and were capable of all sorts of nuances and tone colors. Erich's website is here: http://www.solomonguitars.com/ Full disclosure: I have no commercial ties to Erich, I just like his work a lot. Anyway, the clip took a while to load on my computer, but it's worth watching. Wade Hampton Miller Last edited by Wade Hampton; 03-15-2012 at 04:02 PM. |

I'm getting a "page not found" error for the first link, but I would like to see the video.

Thanks for sharing! I too love and admire Erich's work. The Phi-Tomic that they show in the video with the koa back and sides is just gorgeous. I think, aesthetically, that is my favorite of his models so far (though the Phinesse is a close 2nd). It's taking everything I have to refrain from calling him to ask him how much it will be, and how close to completion it is. Just completed another big guitar purchase and can't move on a Solomon now - but oh, how I would love to!

Those are gorgeous photos.
Koa is not a wood Erich was building with when he lived up here in Alaska - back then it was European maple and European spruce, nothing else. He's still building with maple, obviously, but I'm glad to see he's using koa now, as well. whm |

I find Erich's guitars very elegant. He has a great sense of proportion and balance and keeps his ornamentation simple.

The TV folks must have taken it down already. Oh, well....Erich, if you happen to read this, you ought to look into getting a copy of that clip to put on your website. whm |

Wade,
I will do that for sure. A new website is being worked on because it is long overdue and the kind folks who were hosting my website crashed and burn in a big way. The only thing up now is about 8 years old. Thanks, Erich |

Wade, I did just check and it does still play but perhaps the link is bad. If you go to NH Chronicle and type in Erich Solomon Guitars it will show up. They informed me it will be there for ever! Nice of them really. Thanks, Erich

Wade,
I guess they moved it from one location to another. This link should work and once my new website is up the link will be there as well. I am extremely fortunate to have such a well produced "Meet the Maker" video. Thank you WMUR! Thanks Wade! http://www.wmur.com/new-hampshire-ch...28/detail.html |
