Default Telecaster advice

Looking to buy my son a tele for birthday. He's eyeing the 72

https://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender/...tric-Guitar.gc

Any opinions on this model? He likes the feel of a strat (neck, etc.) but looking for a tele sound. We will, of course, play it before buying but just looking for a starting point. The option would be one of the American series.

Thanks guys

Jed

The 72 deluxe is a classic but probably isn’t going to sound exactly “classic” if you know what I mean. My brother in law had an original deluxe and it was a great guitar (until it was stolen...). It has double humbuckers rather than the more usual (for a Tele) single coil.

If you are after the classic Tele twang you may be better off trying some of the other models, though the 72 Deluxe will sound more Fender than Gibson (for example) even with the double coil pups. Neck wise there is more to a Strat-like neck than just the 70s style headstock: my Classic 60s Tele is pretty similar to my ‘92 American Standard Strat for example.

Hi Jed,
that model comes with two humbuckers so depending upon which tele sound he's looking for you may to try out some Teles with single coils.

It's probably the most non-tele you will find. I've owned a 72 and liked it for what it is, but it's far from the "traditional" tele sound.

Have you considered a Nashville Deluxe? It mixes tele tone with strat handling and controls.

The 72 deluxe is a very different animal from a traditional tele. I’m not a huge fan of the “wide range” humbuckers.

It was fenders idea to mash a strat neck, tele body (with untraditional belly carve), and a les Paul set of controls. In addition they tried to recreate the 72 Seth Lover “wide range” pickups that the original 72 came with. IMO they aren’t close. Not even remotely.

I’d agree that if he wants a tele, with traditional tele twang, either look at the Baja Tele (one of the best teles I’ve owned), or as mentioned above, the Nashville. The Nashville makes for an all around versatile Tele that can provide traditional Tele tones, as well as other tones. These play and sound great also.

The 72 is a great guitar, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not a real tele imo. To me the pickups lack the sparkle, twang and clarity of a traditional Tele

if you want a tele, get one. you can either go new or used. if you both go to your local big box store, play a bunch of them to get an idea of the sound you want. i have an american vintage 58 that is fantastic.

play music!

Yes, this. (Find yourself a Telecaster that at the very least has a single coil in the bridge).

I own a Stratocaster and a Telecaster but to be honest, I can dial in Telecaster bridge pickup "twang and treble" very easily via my Stratocaster Custom Shop 54 bridge pickup if I choose. (You'd be surprised how Telecaster sounding your Stratocaster can be made to sound).

I think that American Standard is a good choice. The Baja recommendation is also a good one IMO.

Looks to be a great guitar, however just check that he is okay with the Stratocaster like body contour (modern twist) on the guitar. (I'm a traditionalist when it comes to Fender guitars and so any Telecaster I own won't have the body contour).

Good luck!
