Default Do any old guys (63) like me take vitamins and supplements?

I’m an avid tennisplayer. Playing 5-6 days a week. Several hours at a time. Recently added Turmeric. I definitely notice a difference! Great inflammatory helper.

Costco has a Kirkland brand Mulit for Mature old farts that I take.

Cheap & probably better than nothing.

I’m still in my (mid) fifties, and as per the wife, are handed a few supplements daily, along with my morning protein/veg juice shake.

I’m also more active now then I was when I was in my 20s, 30s, and 40s.

I’m down 20 lbs in the last 3 months and have 35 more to go.

At 68, my main strategy is to eat well (mostly real, unprocessed organic food, some raw and the rest mainly cooked at home) and exercise (running and cycling). Regarding supplements, I take two tumeric capsules and one with probiotics before breakfast, and eat a square of 85% dark chocolate after. I’ve found pure CBD oil tincture to be a big help if I’m feeling muscle soreness. It’s sold at the local natural foods store. That’s the total of what I take, and my criteria is whether I feel a positive benefit.

I take a daily multivitamin at breakfast and fish oil supplements at dinner. Am presently searching for something to reduce the inflammation in my lower back.

63 is old? You should have known my father-in-law, who was closing in on 94 when he passed a few years ago. He was still living alone unassisted; probably cooked his own last meal.

You do? Sounds to me like you don’t need any supplements at all. I take nothing at 67 but I’d last no more than 5 minutes playing tennis! Maybe *I* should take some

I'm only 56, but for about 30 years now I've been taking a multi-vitamin EVERY morning with breakfast.

I've had two colds in the last fifteen years, and both were when clients came in "slobbering" sick - one right after my brother passed and the other right after my Dad. Coincidence?

This is very much like my approach to nutrition and exercise. I have nothing against using supplements, but all of my research indicates that the best source of nutrition is through diet. My wife and I buy organic foods as often as availability permits, we avoid processed foods, and almost never eat out. As for supplements I take flax oil daily for anti-inflammatory effect (no need for fish oil as we eat at least 5 servings of wild-caught salmon every week) and make sure that I have a serving of organic yogurt daily as a probiotic source. As for exercise, we either cycle or workout on a elliptical 6 days per week. At age 67 it works for me.

I’m 71... None whatsoever.

I’m deeply skeptical of the entire “supplement” industry which time and again has been proved to be either ineffectual or downright harmful.

Years ago, the supplement industry successfully lobbied congress to have these things classified a “food items” rather than drugs or medicines, so there is very little restriction on what the makers can put in there or claim, as long as it’s not direct medical effects.
Several large-scale investigations by state-level agencies recently found the same thing... First, that almost 90% of the supplements tested did not contain ANY of the product claimed on the label.
They did contain large amounts of inactive adulterants like garlic or even grass.

Secondly, even if the claimed substance was present, there was no scientific evidence that the substance had any effect whatever.

Even if you’re getting 100% organically-grown, hand-picked whatever, there is no evidence that the stuff has any beneficial effect.

Billions of dollars spent every year on things which are at worst, not even there, and at best, unproven.

Default There are no...

There are no guidelines for most supplements. I recommend a vitamin D if your vitamin D happens to be low. And other vitamins as directed by lab work that is done by your physician. The problem with supplements is there is a lot of anecdotal information but no real studies that any of them do anything. Worse they are not regulated and so no one knows what they’re really getting when they buy supplements. As to the quality. I’ve had patients take these and develop transient increases in liver enzymes increases. As always, check with your personal physician who has your interests in heart.
