Default Taylor K20 Help

Hi all,

I played a '94 Taylor K20 at a local guitar center and really fell in love with the look and sound. The only damage I saw on this also was on the top part of the head as it had a small nick but nothing major.

I put the guitar on hold Christmas eve and plan to take a closer look tomorrow and I am curious for any feedback I can get. I believe this isn't a 100% Koa, I think the top is Mahogany with the back and sides being Koa but I will find out the finer details tomorrow. I've never played any Koa guitar before and was just curious for anyones opinion as I want to make sure I get a fair price. This is actually also something on consignment, which the owner doesn't usually do but I guess the owner is a friend. Anyway, they are asking $1899. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

-Scott

Jarvis presents a nice review of some interesting guitars-here is a K20

darrell scott owns and has used his K20 for 20+ years or so if my memory is correct-you should be able to find all kinds of youtube videos of him and it in action:

looks like a real nice one in the classifieds:

From a price perspective, you'll probably want to come in a little lower on price for a mid-90's K20, especially if it doesn't have electronics. I'd recommend trying to get closer to $1500. That way you don't get hosed should you try to sell it in the future.

Not the one I am talking about. I just went to the store and talked to owner who is a luthier. This guitar has a mahogany top with koa back and sides. It's a 1994. I will post pictures as the Koa is dark and almost looks like Mahogany.

Couldn't figure out how to put pictures right in thread, so here are links to some images of it.

I have a 1993 K20 that has a Sitka top and Koa B/S. It's a great guitar! I have a couple of Bourgeois dreads, a Collings dread and a Martin HD28 and my K20 gets more than it's share of playing.

That looks like a mahogany top in your pics... which surprises me because I've seen a bunch of K20's and typically they're all Koa or Sitka top.

if you end up with it, definitely post us some soundclips as i think a lot of folks would like to hear this
and if you call taylor with the serial number i bet they can tell you a lot about it-as in how many were built(it may be a one-off or custom order), and other things on the model. taylor is out for the holidays till jan 7 btw.

If you know the serial number, call Taylor customer service and verify to see whether the top is actually mahogany. All of the K2x acoustics I've seen had koa top, back, and sides.

So I called Taylor today. Chris from Taylor verified the serial# as a K20m, which it only says K20 on the inside label. He said never heard of a Mahogany top with Koa back and sides. I ended up sending photos to him as he wanted to see for himself. He also said they system isn't a wealth of information pre 1999, so he couldn't give me any info if it was custom or how many were made. He said he's been working at Taylor though for over 10 years and has never come across the combo before. Will get a sound clip up soon, although I just put some Elixir Nanowebs on and so far I am not liking the tone so far.
