Technically, it's an Advanced Jumbo, because of the Taylor neck scale.

It does seem a bit smaller than my older 310. I have a torn labrum in my shoulder and sold my 310 because it killed it to play. The 717 is super comfortable and i am not running into the same problems.

As the owner of a 2006 Gibson Advanced Jumbo and a 2019 Taylor 517 BE, I have been comparing the 517 to the AJ in a number of my posts. The biggest difference that I notice is the overtone rich rosewood body of the AJ vs. the strong fundamental and articulate sound of the Hog 517. To my ear, the 517 is louder and with noticeably longer sustain, and the features of the BE body style make it much more comfortable to play. The BE neck is a dream for my large hands, and the GP body with the chamfered edges make it make it a guitar I love to hold close when I play . I have tried Phosphor Bronze, 80/20 Bronze and now Martin L.J. Monels on the 517, and every type of string sounds great on this beast! I so enjoy the Gibson, but right now , if I had to choose only one, it wouldn't even be a hard decision. The Taylor GPs are winners, and to bring some balance to the force, I am starting to think about selling the AJ in order to get a 717...

I hold the Gibson AG in a kind of reverence and for you to espouse the tone of the Taylor 517 Builder's Edition very favorably to the AG, spikes my interest in the 517 and 717 Taylors. I've only auditioned a GP 317e and it sounded really good, and I can only imagine the 517/517e and 717/717e sounding even better. Thanks for putting me, and I'm sure others, in a position of considering a Taylor Grand Pacific model as our next guitar!
