Default My First Electric (After 20 Years on the Acoustic)

Just received my first electric guitar after playing acoustic for nearly 20 years. I read everything I could on AGF and played the local GC's. Nothing in the nearby big box shops sounded much better than a mic'd up travel guitar. In spite of that, it was still clear to me that knew I needed a 335 semi-hollow style to try and adjust to electric. I definitely wanted the fat tones and versatility that everyone seems to talk about and I was hoping for.

After two years of looking around, I took the risk last week and got a near mint 2017 Heritage 535 off Reverb. I've been playing it for a week and it is changing my whole outlook on playing, even my approach to the acoustic. I couldn't be happier. Phenomenal fit and finish. Beautiful tone. It even sounds like a legitimate instrument unplugged.

The notion of getting an electric to improve my approach to the acoustic is novel to me. Going for the lesser known brand expecting higher quality at a lower cost is my basic expectation at this point, and it was proved once again.

Just want to throw my experience out there for anyone on the fence about moving into the electric world, especially the 335-style, especially the Heritage 535. Thanks AGF.

Hey, congrats!

You know, I consider the two forms of guitar to be complimentary to each other and some of the techniques cross over. For years I basically played with fingers only on the acoustic but I'm now doing quite a bit with my fingers on the electric, including leads.

Have fun!

No fence for me, I love ES-335 style guitars, and Heritage makes a great one.

What amp? I play mine through a Vox AC4HW1 and Vintage Sound V-15.

Yum!

You did the right thing and got yourself a real winner right there. Heritage makes fantastic guitars.

Fantastic! I've read nothing but excellent things about Heritage guitars over the years. Congrats and enjoy.

Regarding the amp, it was enough for me to move into varied intricacies of the electric guitar world that I haven't been able to make much sense in the amp realm too. I went with my local guitar repair shop's recommendation with a Fender Blues Junior off of Craigslist. It seems simple, clean and gets me the tone I'm hoping for. Any basic insights on amps for the future?

Hey jab,

Boy did you pick a winner! As Jeff said, heritage makes some fantastic guitars!
I’ve owned several, and have my eye on a sweet 16 right now. Enjoy it!

like bob i consider guitars to be, well, guitars. i don't believe in "dark side" nor playing one exclusively and not the other.

IMO the Blues Jr is a nice place to start. You may decide you never need another amp (good luck with that ).

I think the ES-335 sounds great through both my Vox AC4HW1 and Fender Princeton Reverb clone (Vintage 15). It is a little more finicky with my Tweed Deluxe, which has a more mid-focused sound.

It will sound great with a lot of other amps as well, I just don't have experience with them.

yes, a fender with 6V6 tubes instead of the EL84 tubes in the blues jr. 6v6 will give you more of the fender sound. depending upon how many watts you need, you could go with a deluxe reverb, new as a '65 or the '68. used as a blackface or silverface. they are about 22 watts. or a princeton reverb, new or used. they are about 12-15 watts

here is the fender amp section to peruse.

Congrats and great post!
I can't imagine my musical journey without the electric guitar. Yes, no question it compliments playing acoustic, and vice versa. One or the other can get me out of sticking points, especially when creating. Glad to hear the Heritage is working out for you. If it inspired you to play, it is a fine guitar.

kev: sure i do, but i worry that the term will turn off others who may be wanting to try electric after being exclusively acoustic.
