You don't have to hit all six strings with every strum.

Fifty years ago a friend told me to play carefully, and to listen closely to my guitar, to focus on being musical, rather than being perfect but mechanical.

Spend less time on the internet and more time practicing.

Learn to play classical style and read music. So glad I started out with this method.

Whatever you're learning practice it slow and accurately, otherwise all you end up praciticing is your mistakes.

I likely didn't get all of this advice in the same sentence, or even in the same day, but as a beginner my teacher taught me some very important fundamentals to which I've always stayed true:

1. Get comfortable alternate picking as soon as possible
2. Dedicate one finger to four respective frets (most of the time)
3. Don't shy away from using your pinky
4. Don't 'cheat' on your barre chords (e.g. the 2-finger A shape). Learn the proper way and then learn the shortcuts later.

I've discovered many more tips and tricks on my own in the ensuing 17 years, but those are the ones that have stuck with me since the very beginning.
