"Never eat anything bigger than your head."

Oops sorry wrong advice. How about:

"If it's not fun why are you doing it?"

"I don't want to hear that it's too hard, no such thing. Just keep working on it, you'll get it". That was from a friend of mine trying to help me in a jazz improv class in college. That friend had far more talent and skill at age 21 than I've ever had!

Practice listening. Cultivate your ability to listen to your playing as objectively as you would listen to a song on the radio.

Best,
Jayne

Get organized! It took me many years before I discovered that having copies of all my favorite music in one or two binders made it easy to continue playing one piece after another without having to hunt for what I was going to play next. I now have over 150 pieces in one thick binder and can play continuously for as long as I want. The binder has an index and tabs, sorted by type of song, which makes it easy to find any song I want to play.

I started almost 9 years ago at age 58. I still consider myself a self learning beginner. There are several things I have been told that all hold equal weight in the good advice column for me.

# 1. Have fun
2. Practice, practice, practice
3. Play with others that you can learn from
4. Do not worry about what others think of your playing, just play
5. When it is no longer fun, find a new hobby.

Put that guitar down and take two weeks off.

Then quit.

Actually, that's a golf joke, but it works here too.

"Play the heck out of what you have."

Great advice. Wish I'd listened...

Be excellent to each other! It will come through in everything you do, including playing guitar.

My Dad was a big band drummer. When I started learning guitar there were a few sage pieces of advice he gave me.

1. If you really want to learn to play that instrument YOU have to wanna.

2. If you don’t enjoy it then why would you do it?

3. If really learn how to play an instrument you will never be alone.

After my third guitar purchase from my local guitar dealer he told me that it was time for me to get a Martin.
He didn't sell Martin guitars.
