Default NUGD - 2006 Taylor 614ce

I've actually had this guitar for about a month but only began to play it a couple of days ago. More about that later.

On a whim, I happened to look through our local Craigslist at guitars, knowing that there was almost no chance I would ever buy one of them. One of the ads caught my eye because it was a higher priced instrument labeled as "Acoustic Guitar" with no picture. Even the text of the ad only described it as a Taylor without any reference to the model number. Then I saw in fine print off to the side a field for model number and it was a 614ce, a model that I had been interested in. I couldn't resist and contacted the seller. It took about a week to find out that this was really a guitar that I wanted to see.

My wife is firmly convinced I have too many guitars and was not at all happy I was thinking about buying another one. After some negotiation, she relented and we compromised that if I bought it, I would have to sell of some of my stuff before starting to play it.

Armed with her grudging approval, I went off to look at the 614ce. It turns out that the seller and I went to the same high school and were only one year apart with some mutual acquaintances. The original owner of the guitar could no longer play it due to deterioration in his hands and I sensed it was painful to be selling it. I felt almost like I was being interviewed for the position of caretaker.

We negotiated a little on the price and after reaching agreement had a nice chat before I headed back home.

Now that I have had a chance to play it some I am quite happy with my decision. The combination of clear fundamental tones with nice sustain are exactly what I was hoping for. This is a guitar that will not cover up any sloppy playing and I am finding that is good for me.

Congratulations on finding it! Looks very nice. Having some connection with the buyer makes the deal all the more special.

The pre-Andy Powers Taylors exemplified the exquisite unmistakable tone of maple! Andy brought a new dimension to what maple could do but I'm still in love with the pre-Andy Maple Taylors! Enjoy!

I was amazed at the condition. On close examination I could only find one extremely small/shallow dent that is practically invisible and no scratches. I would rate it as mint. The neck angle is correct and the truss rod doesn't need adjustment but the action is 1/64 above what I prefer. For now I am just going to enjoy it the way it is and decide whether to sand the saddle later.

Thanks for the positive comments! I know Taylor guitars don't always get much love here, but this one is sure making me happy.

Hollybrook, Congrats on the beautiful 614ce! Great that you were able to strike a friendship with the previous owner. He'll be reaching out to you in a few months to make sure the Taylor is still doing well. Enjoy!
