Default "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne (cover)

I have enjoyed John Mayer's acoustic version of this Tom Petty/Jeff Lynne song and so my cover of "Free Fallin" is fairly similar to John Mayer's version. I wish my voice were 30 years younger so I could do a better job on those high falsetto notes near the end, but I am grateful that I can sing at all! This song uses only 3-chords (D, G, A) but John Mayer did a great job of making it interesting between chord variations on the guitar and very inventive singing.

The guitar is a Santa Cruz OM/PW. Thanks so much for watching!

Very nice, Glenn!! I liked where the capo is set in regard to your voice, seemed like a sweet spot for you.....but I also realize you needed room to "go high" at the end!
Also, the up and down strokes combined with that picking pattern are really well done for the song. The palm muting here and there really add in for the bass notes too! Very cool!!
As always, some great classic sounds arriving from your studio, Glenn!!
Happy Weekend!

Thank you Fred!

I appreciate your comments!

I placed the capo where John Mayer placed it for his version. That seemed to work out okay for me, although that falsetto stuff at the end was really pushing it.

I actually had to spend a couple of weeks with this song, learning to mostly sing it the way John Mayer approached this song. Learning something like this really let me see how inventive John Mayer is with not just rhythm but his choice of notes for melody.

I would have thought that a 3-chord song would not take so much work, but there are so many subtle, really deceptively difficult things in this song, that I really had to work on this for a while to even come close to what John Mayer did with this song. He really is quite a musician.

Thanks for your comments Fred! You are always so generous!

Excellent,, Glenn. I’ve been doing this one live and as you mentioned .. there’s a lot going on for 3 chords. My approach is similar (JM) way, because it suits my vocal range as well.

So again, great job on your playing and singing.

Thank you Jake!

It's great to know you are listening! And how interesting that you also do this song!

It's deceptively difficult, combining the way he sings this with that rhythm that repeatedly hits on the off beat. I must say, I was surprised at the effort I had to put into learning this.

I hope you are doing well Jake. I'm glad you are doing some recording these days.

Hi JDTO!

Very generous of you to comment! Thank you for taking the time. I'm really pleased that you liked how this came out. For some reason this one took more effort for me to get down than usual. As I mentioned above, at least for me this song was deceptively difficult when it seemed so simple on the surface.

John Mayer really is quite a musician!

Hi Frankie!

Thanks so much! Yes, I guess I did put myself out there... I hadn't really tumbled to that, but you are right. But how cool if that provides some inspiration and motivation for you!
