Totally independent of the tuning, this just seems to come down to personal preference. Martin interprets traditional folk (mostly Irish, etc) music, which I suspect you just aren't into. To me, this is totally gorgeous, something to aspire to, and it's reassuring to see in the comments that I'm not alone.

But not all music is for everyone, we all enjoy what we like, which varies widely, as it should. I still would't blame the tuning. You likely wouldn't like Martin's music if he played in standard, either.

I don't agree compositions and arrangements are created totally independent of the guitar's tuning, though there is a room for individual style and variation.

My dad was Irish. I like Irish and Celtic music quite a bit actually, but I am somewhat selective. The piece above was almost noodling composition wise, though the sound was lush.

Here are a couple of performances I prefer:

He's playing rubato with a lot of ornamentation, probably drawing on bagpipes as inspiration. Martin's a very thoughtful and also very emotional player, so Im sure hes playing exactly what he means and feels. My problem is I tend to like everything, I just enjoy guitar, and what different people do with it. Maybe hes "noodling" but it sounds good to me!

Martin wrote the first part of that song about the passing of his mother. I find it to be one of the most emotional songs that I have heard and learned how to play. I have followed Martin Simpson for nearly 30 years. I have enjoyed watching and hearing him evolve as a musician and an artist. His style and technique are his own and not "cliche". I have also studied the work of Pierre Bensusan, Simon Fox, Doug Young, Alex DeGrassi etc. To say that any of these "artists" sound is cliche because they do work in DADGAD brings to mind some thing my father once told me.

Hedge's Ragamuffin is one of my favorites in DADGAD but I assume you know of that one already.
Here a few more from Hedges in DADGAD:
the first cutting (on a very cool little Martin parlor)
peg leg speed king

This arrangement by Paul Asbell of an old spiritual works very well in DADGAD too:
Down In The Valley To Pray/In My Time Of Dying

Most of those you mentioned have written pieces that I like. I am sure there is a lot out there that I have not heard that is in DADGAD and other open string type tunings which has interesting song development and strong melodies. I was hoping for links to some of these as I was considering writing another tune in DADGAD and it might be a good impetus.
I am happy to drop the use of the word "cliché", but the rest of what I mentioned remains.

Right now I'm working on a few of Simon Fox's pieces. He has generously posted a couple dozen pieces on his website. I find it fresh!

Thanks for the links Andre. Yes, Ragamuffin is a standout.

Yes, here on his website are the tabs I mentioned earlier in this thread.

Glad you are enjoying his tunes.

Also comments by Simon Fox (which help make some of my points but which is rather ironic IMO)

Rick, I admire your playing, songs, and wonderful recording sound. The selections you chose in DADGAD were really excellent and beautiful. I'm an amateur in all this but perhaps a song I just finished would qualify as something in DADGAD to assist with finding any impetus for a next tune. It's called "Autumn's Soul".

Best wishes,

Nice Fred. Melodic, thoughtful, minor to major key twist. I will keep it in mind.
