Why thanks Jessupe,
It's my good fortune to do what I get to do!

Default Button Wood

I've been making my own custom tuner buttons for a long time. One of my favorites is Cocobolo, especially when it's made with a light colored sapwood cap:

I just bought this new piece of Amboyna Burl and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a new favorite!:

This is 10 1/2" by 5" and 2 1/4' thick. I expect I'll get quite a few white capped Amboyna Burl tuner buttons out of this

Mark,
We would love to see a tutorial on how you make your tuner buttons. I enjoy seeing how others approach tasks like that.

Default tuner knobs

The little things like that which you do help make your guitars just that much more special. Worked nicely for me, it did.

Very nice looking knobs you're making there, Mark.

Sure! I think over the years I’ve shown photos of every step but, I don’t think I ever pulled the steps to making buttons together in one post.

Thanks for saying that! There is a lot of detail work that can be put into a guitar

Beautiful! I would imagine some awesome rosettes and TRCs may be in the offing as well.

Yeah, I expect it will make it into rosettes, etc. As a back-up I also got some 6" by 6" Amboyna in red and gold:

Hi Tim, I’m using Timber Wolf 3/4” 2-3 positive claw blades with a .025” blade thickness. They cut a .049” kerf which I feel is a lot of wood to be turning to dust. They cut well but, I’m open to change because the kerf is so wide.[/QUOTE]

Mark, if thin kerf is the priority, then try the Wood slicer from Highland woodworking. Or maybe you've tried it? .022" blade and a total kerf of about .032". I tried it a few times, and while it cut very smooth and quiet, and thin, it seemed to wear out much quicker than the Timberwolf blade that you've mentioned. I've been using the same timerwolf blade and it's the best I've found in terms of smoothness, longevity, and thin kerf.

Smile Burly!

Wow the burls are all beautiful, as is the button you show, but that amboyna is really unbelievably beautiful!

Nice stuff, Mr. Hatcher

Thanks again for sharing with us all.

Cheers

Paul

It's too bad burled amboyna probably can't be used for a back and sides.

I have it on a bass and it looks alright.

Thanks for commenting Ryan. I haven’t tried the Wood Slicer blades but, have heard they were a good alternative to the TimberWolf blades. I’m quickly learning that a well tuned bandsaw set up with a clean, smooth, straight cut is more important (less wasteful) than the width of the kerf. If the Wood Slicer wears out quicker I suppose I’d be better off perfecting my re-saw chops with the Timberwolf blades and then explore later. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Yeah, that bass doesn’t look too bad, awesome might be a better description!
Thanks for showing that!

You're welcome. It's almost tragic that I had pickups, knobs, and a bridge obstructing the full view of the wood.
