Bach on the mandolin
It's a little "plinky" - been playing for almost 4 months and spent about a month on this piece. Teach says I need to work on tone; so, that's on the to-do list, while I get back to working on the fiddle tunes & bluegrass I started this whole "let's learn some mandolin" thing for.
If you are not a fan of mandolin, nothing to see here (Background in the video is a quilt my grand mother's aunt made for her, sometime in the early part of the last century.)

This is wonderful, thanks for sharing this, IMHO it has a baroque type sound, and that alone is cool. This was well done, and not easy to play.

Wow, Keith!
Great job on this! Believe it or not, I know that Bach piece! That sounded really good on the mandolin! Four months of playing the mandolin?! Good for you! Well done! - Glenn

Let me add my ‘wow’ as well. That mandolin sound reminded me of a harpsichord, or something like that. Well done, sir.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and time listening.
I got a little "focused" on this piece because the online bluegrass lessons I'm taking has a lot of emphasis on learning to create variations, and frankly, that's hard for me to do, whereas reading a piece of music, and even memorizing that seems much easier. But, I may have overdone it, as my wife now walks around the house whistling this in its entirety . Glenn - I heard a guitar arrangement that was really nice with many of the chords filled in while still getting the melody notes in. Would love to hear yours! Those chords are largely left to the imagination in those [5th tuned] violin and mandolin family instruments, and the lack of the bow's sustain makes them even more fleeting on the mandolin, at least so far. (I do have a copy of the Prelude from the same suite that is waiting for me to stop beating my head on the desk trying to pick out some Blackberry Blossom licks...)

Bravo for this excellent work which represents a real challenge because it is far from being simple. Excellent and thank you

4 months? Awesome.
I have owned my Eastman MD305 for a few years now, and I can’t touch your proficiency. Beautiful. And when you can play songs like this, even due to memorization, know that “muscle memory” accompanies your hard work. So you may be playing in a jam, and relationships and finger movements click in your head, and lo and behold you solo’d like a master… even though you might not recreate it after! |
