Default OBD-II Reader

I have long wanted to get one of these to be forewarned/armed before taking my car to the shop in the event of a warning light illumination. I kept forgetting about it until I saw an ad on TV this morning for a Micro Mechanic.

I never buy anything solely on the basis of a TV commercial (except, of course, auto insurance) and a little online research has me leaning toward a device called FIXD, which has high ratings on Amazon.

What has your experience been with any of these devices?

I've used a bunch of different ones and all have worked well, including the really cheap ones. Also, most Auto parts stores like AutoZone will read codes for free.

There are many decent readers on Amazon for pretty cheap. Just read the reviews.

Innova and Autel are the two industry leaders in consumer type scanners. For your needs an entry level tool from either would probably suffice. These would be my recommendations for a basic tool from either brand:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007XE8C74...6870561&sr=8-1

https://www.amazon.com/Innova-3030h-...innova+scanner

I have an upscale Innova that runs around $200-250. Reads live data, ABS and lots of other things most people wouldn't care to learn.

Be aware that diagnosing and repairing a modern vehicle isn't as simple as reading codes and replacing parts. For an average Joe, it can be a case of a little knowledge being dangerous.

OBD 2 is just the level of information the government requires a consumer to have access to. The manufacturer has another whole system that only professionals have access to. OBD 2 may or may not provide the level of information you need.

So, unless you want to educate yourself a bit, the information an OBD 2 scanner provides you can be quite useless.
