If you can't get rid of it and have to put it on the curb for the dpw, just check to see if you have to take the doors off. Years ago that was the law almost everywhere, but because of the design changes of the doors, it isn't necessary, but the laws could still be on the books.

I had a neighbor who, when he couldn’t get rid of something, would put it at the curb with a sign that said $50. Overnight it would be stolen. Problem solved.

There is not enough in a fridge to be worth much - it has to be collected by the tech, sent to a reclaim center, then purified. Typical pay for the product sent for reclaim is $2-$5/lb, assuming it is not too dirty to clean up.
Your AC guy probably makes a nice markup on that refrigerant, as there are only a few of the older no-longer-produced refrigerants that get that kind of money. At some point, its beneficial to get the system updated (usually seals and compressor) so a newer refrigerant can be used.

you are correct. but, i'm sure i'm not the only one going for the rebate so it must overall be quite a bit. that is unless people buy a new fridge every 3 years like a car. probably not tho.

the ac is probably good for another 15-20 years. probably outlive me. ha!
