Russian kids doing Metheny covers....
Just stumbled across these youngins - very good Metheny covers. They are getting very few views and hardly any comments - almost criminal.
Jaco - it will play fine if you click on "watch on Youtube"

Nice! Just listened to "Jaco" and enjoyed it thoroughly... pretty darned ambitious to cover Pat's stuff, and they did a very good job of it!
I'll check out the other tune a bit later on... thanks for posting, Todd!

Finally got the chance to watch the take of "Watercolours"... very nice job on that one too! And a fairly obscure Metheny tune, although the album is a favorite; I still have a pristine vinyl copy...

Checked out some of the vids and reminded me of a phrase one of the cats in the Sting movie (was it "Dream of the blue turtles"?) said:
"I'm a jazz musician, I know what it's like to be playing music, that nobody wants to hear."

Glad this music has passed on to the repertoire of young musicians. Their covers can be a lot more exciting than what Pat's doing now. As a lifelong fan, it pains me to say this, but Metheny's solo show in Denver the other nights was disappointing on so many levels. Pat belongs in the middle of a band, not alone with some looper pedals, but large-scale ensembles like the PMG seem to be a thing of the past. And without Lyle, more than half of that magic duo is missing now. If you want to hear an hour of pensive, moody medlies on acoustic guitar, Dream Box is your tour. If you remember the live spectacles of the first half of his career, this tour is just sad. He still has great chops, but the drama and variety was missing.
Sorry for the sidetrack, I needed to get that out of my head. More on point, I still have a late 1990s t-shirt for the PMG's Russian tour. It's worn out and unwearable, now, reminding me of how music and world affairs have deteriorated since that time. But it's nice to see these cover performances, which might be echoes of what their parents watched and discovered on that same tour.

That brings back a lot of memories!
I've been a Pat Metheny fan since I heard him in Gary Burton's band around 1975. I first saw him live in 1976 with Gary Burton and then 1977 when the PMG debuted. I had a band in 1979-81 where we played Metheny-related tunes (Colours of Chloe, Bright Size Life, April Joy, American Garage, The Epic). I wish YouTube had been around then as there would be mementoes for me now. It was impossible to get booked playing jazz-rock-progressive *instrumental* music then - not that it is much better now. It is gratifying that Pat is one of the top-grossing contemporary jazz artists for decades, without needing to lower his standards in any significant way. @Birdbrain - I agree with your opinion that the PMG stuff was the most thrilling part of his repertoire. However, I saw a Side-Eye tour and the young keyboardist was killing; reminded me of Lyle and the way he would inspire Pat. I am passing on Dream Box tour, but I haven't counted Pat out quite yet.

I would be in heaven if I heard a local band play The Epic - that's quite an accomplishment.

That was very cool and encouraging. I hope more young Russians can turn towards a similar path like these talented musicians.
