Catalyzed urethane or water base lacquer ?
I am having a custom 000 12 fret built. I have a choice between catalyzed urethane or water base lacquer. I have read several articles on both but I would like to ask my faithful ( and super smart ) AGF friends.
Catalyzed urethane or water base lacquer ??? Thanks guys. ( once again ) daniel |

What does the builder prefer? Being a custom built, I assume he has a really clear idea of what you're going for tonewise.
I've been using post cat conversion on instruments and it gets hard really fast and can get you that crystalline tone that nitro takes 20 years to achieve. Tone being roughly equivalent, the urethane will be more durable if that's a consideration.

Have the luthier show you samples of both.
Some water based lacquers have a bluish cast to them you may not like. Ask him which is easier to repair. |

I don't think any luthier worth his salt will be using anything with a blue cast these days. There's plenty of options that claim no blue cast.

It is easy to ask to see a sample. Any luthier worth his salt should be happy to show you.
