The square neck combined with a cutaway really puzzles me as well. First you'd think it could not be used. Then I think more about how they are played, on the lap, and realized maybe a cutaway could have some use - were it on the bass not the treble side.

Fourteen frets is pretty easy to play on a non cutaway guitar unless you are playing chord voicing up there, or have a 12 fret to the body guitar.
