Got a chuckle out of that one. Just hit me, been thinking about a mandolin. Never even picked one up so I know I will sound like do-do.

Seen a mandolin on the Elderly website. Price, $120,000. I'll get that one.

"I'll never be as good as my instruments, therefore don't deserve them."

If I followed that mantra I'd be single, living in a small trailer, and riding the bus to my minimum wage job--not that there's anything wrong with that (been there).

Do you think these $2000 tuners are too expensive?

You could be right in which case it is a case of two different signal chains and one being inferior to the other. But that does not detract from the accuracy of what i was maintaining- which is that there is a difference betwen the skill of a musician and the inherent quality of the instrument he is playing.

But most of the least talented players have the least expensive starter instruments. So that seems to indicate that iwhat you are describing is very much in the minority.

Many professional musicians do not have the means to buy more expensive instruments. Many of the most talented players who have the financial means have the most extensive collections of expensive guitars.

All that this shows is that people buy what they want and can afford. The same person will be able to produce a better tone if he played a better instrument unless his genre of music requires a very one dimensional sound.

WHO CARES WHAT KIND OF GUITAR SOMEONE OWNS!! Can’t we just be happy for someone who gets a nice guitar?? I had and Art & Lutherie guitar for 3 months and then bought a Taylor 810 after playing for 3 months. That 810 has been played MANY hours now and is so awesome I wanted to play it all the time! The difference the 810 made on a beginner player was immense! It’s so easy to play and made my guitar journey SO MUCH easier and enjoyable. So I’m a prime example of how a expensive guitar, bought very early in your playing time, can become a lifetime instrument and make you want to play guitar the rest of your life! I’ll own that guitar until the day I die and then it’ll be my kids to hopefully keep their whole life!!

Yeah, Chris Thile and his $150k mandolin just stink on ice.

Instead of all this arguing over guitar prices and abilities, here’s a video of this kid playing guitar.

He's brilliant.

I bet he doesn't gripe and moan about who plays what or how much it costs. He wouldn't have gotten that good spending the time it takes to do so.

Every time I see one of these type threads, I'm reminded that I read an interview with Bill Collings a few years ago, and he was asked how he expected working musicians to afford his guitars at their price point...

His answer was "If I had to depend on working musicians to buy my guitars, I'd be sleeping under a bridge..."

If a hack back porch picker can afford an expensive guitar and he enjoys playing it, more power to him...

Thanks for sharing Fang E’s video. The original it links to is also excellent. Fang was born to play - an impressive young man with a BIG future in music.

I just realized how much I hate the song Wish You Were Here. Which is weird, because I love Pink Floyd (specifically Dark Side), and I love the acoustic guitar, and it’s one of the first songs I learned to play as a teenager. But it has never pleased my ears.
