Default Repainting cases ???

Hi, almost all my guitars live in TKL cases. They suit me but I wish they weren't always black. I'm not big on black stuff in clothes or shoes or whatever.

I'd love to have brown cases.

Some of my cases are, of course showing signs of wear but still perfectly serviceable, and it suddenly occured to me that ....I ...might ...paint them ...with leather paints.
I know of a make called Feibings which has worked on my straps ...
but Tolex?

Anybody done anything like this?

Am I being Stoopid?
Ah, gotta go, there's the nurse with my meds.

You need a vinyl paint. Or maybe you meant leather pants?

Andy, step back from the Feiblings! Your cases have done a sterling job acquiring the scuffs and dings that your guitars might otherwise have accumulated. Those are battle scars, well-earned and to be proudly displayed, not disguised with Feiblings cosmetics

Solution: stickers. Plaster one of the cases with stickers. I've done this. RSPB stickers, Alumni stickers from your alma mater, a "Mind the Gap" sticker, something political, et cetera.

Probably best to do this with a case belonging to a guitar you're not planning to sell.

Because of its ability to attract heat, black is the worst possible color in my opinion. Cases are like Model T's - any color you want as long as it is black. Tie a bandana to the handle, try the paint on one first, use stickers or colored tape, shoe polish....

I agree Black is not a good color !!! I have been thinking of getting some White acrylic spray paint and masking off the latches, and the edges of the top, bottom and sides, and see how that would be. And if it gets dirty just hit the spots with a nice fresh touch up. I certainly would feel better about taking my guitars out to go somewhere in this Florida sun, not having to worry too much about them heating up !!! I've seen some cases in adds that are white, but $5.99 for a can of spray paint vs $150.00 to $200.00 for a new case, no contest !!!

Other than the guitar that he had just built for me, Mark Angus gave me a splendid piece of advice when I picked up my guitar from him in 1979...

(At the time, I was traveling a lot; by car, bus, plane, train, however...)

He told me to PAINT MY GUITAR CASE WHITE!!!

So, I did. Got some vinyl spray... first, I cleaned the case with TSP and a sponge, dried it well, then used some OOOO steel wool to "rough up the surface" a bit. Masked the hinges, handle and latches, and had at it!

Worked like a charm... not only was the case optically MUCH more observable, it also stayed much cooler than a black case in the direct sunlight.

I agree that black is about the worst color you could get for a guitar case... paint it white and not only will you derive the above benefits, it will stand out even more because there are so few cases that aren't black.

My Angus acoustic is still with me, as my main "stage" guitar, and that case is pretty beat-up at this point, but the white color is still there (somewhat).

I found that, should that case move when it was anywhere in my periphery, I noticed right away... like at a bar, when I was packed up and finished for the night, but was getting my money from the owner... if anyone moved that white case, I could see it easily, even out of the corner of my eye.

One thing I will say is that, to do a decent job on that case, it took a second can of that vinyl spray...

So, the reason 90% or so of guitar cases are black is . . . . . . ?

Well, you aren't giving me much encouragement are you?

Sticikers ? No, Bandandas ? No - neither are my style. As I have five near identical cases for my Dreads and 12s stacked together , I used to find t difficult to see which was which, so I have tasteful brass plates made up to clearly show which is what.
It's just ... black ...why black ? I hate black .....

We're in England; what is this 'heat' thing of which you speak?

I think auto upholstery paint might be the ticket.

It's that stuff we had last summer but hadn't seen since 1976 before that.
