Default How many sets of spare strings you will keep?

I usually keep 3-4 sets coated strings. Recently switch to uncoated strings, I purchase in bulk so I got 25 sets and will repurchase if I have less than 5. Looking forward to yours

Are you talking per guitar/instrument, or in total? I usually keep 1-2 sets for each instrument, but with multiple instruments that number really changes. I'll vote, in total. My guitars are in my sig, but then I have 6 mountain dulcimers too.

I usually just keep a single spare set and then replace it once they go onto the guitar. I generally find I have at least a couple of months between changes (I like coated strings for this reason) and that leaves plenty of time to fill the kanban.

Some regard me as a guitar collector.

By numbers alone, I'd say I am more of a sting collector.

I've just written a details inventory but for some reason it disappeared.
So I'll just say - I have an airtight "Really Useful" CD/DVD box in which I store my strings. It has a hygrometer and two dessicant bags to keep RH as low as possible.
According to the notes on top it contains :

22 sets medium PBs - D'adds and Martin

14 sets - lights - PBs - Da'dds, Martins, Dunlop and Darco

12 string x 2 - D'add (PB) and Martin (80/20)

Reso x 3 - D'add and Dunlop Ej42,

Jazz (Nickels) x 3 (D'add NB and Darco)

Mandolin x 3 Dunlop and D'add nb.

Use of mediums (dread etc.,) and 12 string and dobro has decreased radically over the past 15 months, but use of light gauge strings 000 and smaller has increased.

Jazz guitars with nickel plated get changed very infrequently and don't seem to suffer for it.
Obviously I have a fair stock of single strings as spares as well esp, 12 str. octaves and mandolin string, and there is a set of banjo strings in there too.

The stocks were increased in 2019, due to potential economic import issues, and have not been that much used.

4-6 per GAUGE/BRAND. Some guitars are electric, some acoustic, some take 10s, 11s, 12s... I've got over 20 sets of strings, but for 7 different guitars.

For acoustics, one likes Sunbeams, one likes Martin FX, one likes Elixirs....

I always have 15 - 20 packs of strings on hand because I'm changing the strings on my gigging guitars every week. I really don't consider those spare strings though as they are what is needed for me to do my job. In the case of each guitar I keep several individual D and G strings because those are the ones I break. I usually have a full set stuck in my gig bag as well for emergency purposes. I probably should mention that I'm now a PRO Artist with John Pearse strings, I still have to pay for my strings but at a discount rate. I buy in bulk every couple of months.

When I use a set of strings I buy a replacement so I can change them when I'm ready, but other than that I don't have a store of strings.

I buy in bulk. The 25 count boxes of EJ-16/EJ-17. But have had those quite a while as I cycle thru them. Also bought 20 sets of EXP's on a closeout, half 13's, half 12's. If I start digging around I probably have some John Pearse and GHS probably PB and 80/20's? No idea what gauge. I bought some XT's which are currently on some of my guitars but used them all I believe. I want to try the XS strings as so many here seem to like them...

As my herd expanded, I had to change strings so often
that I came to buy sets by the dozen to save some dough.

Since I am used to try different string types on a guitar or another,
I now have almost (not a truck load LOL ! ) but a small trunk of string sets !

I have three sets for my Baritone.
I have at least four sets for my 12-string.
And I have enough for two changes for each of my 6-strings.
