One little mention on BOB DYLAN? This list starts with Bob, goes through all these great songwriters, and then comes back to Bob.

Most peoples favorites are Blonde on Blonde and Blood on the Tracks

Mine are Desire (with Scarlett Rivera) and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid!

Excellent call. He has so many great albums from each of the past 5 decades, but 'Ghosts On The Road' should be in everyone's collection.

Impossible to list one single album when she has so many worthy contenders, but Janis Ian is probably one of my favourite singer-songwriters.

Tapestry by Carole King. I was a teenager when her album came out and it changed my life.

Will Varley - Kingsdown Sundown
Most of his other albums are a bit punkier in attitude and sound, but this is pretty much one man, one nylon strung acoustic and quite a few songs of subtle protest

John Smith - any of his albums, my favourite is Great Lakes, but Headlong (a bit poppier) and Hummingbird are his two most recent.

Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad
Such an amazing album, and the only one of his I really like.

Damian Wilson - any, but if you can get 'I Thought The World Was Listening' it's a greatest hits, brilliant (and very varied) collection.

Kathryn Williams - Songs From The Novel Greatest Hits
Even better if listened to while reading the actual novel - Greatest Hits by Laura Barnett

Martha Tilston - Nomad
Some great albums from her, but this is my favourite.

Just a few with a (mostly) British vibe...

Lots of great stuff mentioned, I just want to second J Patrick’s nomination of Solid Air by John Martyn.

That is indeed an excellent album and the first time I've seen Damian mentioned on such a forum! He's pretty unknown. even in the UK, but has written some very good songs and has one of the best voices I've ever heard. Be sure to check him out on tour with Adam (son of Rick) Wakeman in January. Hopefully there will be a new Headspace album soon too.

Wow...so many. First, I love the singer/songwriter live albums. Some, like my wife, think it’s cheating when you pick a live album as a favorite because they are essentially “Greatest Hits” which is a rule violation. But isn’t being a singer/songwriter mostly about being live?

So, here goes my favorite Live albums:
Joni Mitchell—Miles of Aisles
John Mayer—Where the Light Is
Bruce Cockburn—Live
Don McLean-Solo

As for the studio:
Fogelberg—Innocent Age (life changing)
Dan Hill—Longer Fuse
Paul Simon—Graceland
Jackson Browne—The Pretender, I’m Alive (the best album ever written about relationships IMHO)
Carole King—Tapestry
Don McLean—American Pie
Jimmy Buffett—-Floridays
Billy Joel—River of Dreams
James Taylor—Hourglass
John Denver—Rocky Mountain High
