It's also a huge help to have the time and knowledge to properly ring out the system before the show. Carefully carving out a couple of feedback-prone frequencies can allow you a lot more gain overall.

I regularly do sound in a small, low-ceiling room with 4-6(!) LDCs (inexpensive Behringer B1s), not much more than 6' apart, for kids performances. Many of them are quiet and not close or on-axis to the mics, in spite of how many are in front of them. If I couldn't ring things out, I'd never get enough gain to amplify the kids who are mumbling into their shirt.
