No, you need a sheet of sandpaper laid on a flat surface.

I actually like to use a file clamped in a vise too.

Work smarter, not harder?

I have a 12" x 12" piece of porcelain tile. I've attached a self-adhesive backed, 8" round, 150 grit sanding disc to it. I have a 12" piece of 1" x 3" porcelain that I lay on top of the tile to guide the saddle or nut against to square the bottom. It's not the best option, but it's worked really well for me over time and I like it's portability.

It is vital to have the bottom of the saddle flat for good seating. Flatness is even more important if you have an under-saddle pickup element, so you have a shot at getting even tone between strings.
Sanding sponges get used to keep my fingertip callouses in check on my fretting hand (I keep one by my TV chair for maintenance purposes just like with fingernail files) but are not used for semi-precision sanding. I have acquired a couple of scrap pieces of polished granite to use as a machinist's "flat" when sanding. |
