Thanks for continuing to share these. It's really interesting to see it coming along. I think the final bridge design will have a really large impact on the look of it, but I'm really liking the clean lines in the guitar as it stands.

Bridge
Quote:
As I said at the start of the post what I didn't want was an "old" looking instrument so I've kind of modelled it on (ironically) a classic Martin style (except for the rosette). You're spot on, the bridge will be a make or break from a design perspective...so we shall see how that pans-out. I like the sort of "Lowden style" of bridge so I might have Steve make something like that. I am amazed at his speed of work, no sooner have we agreed something than it's done!

It’s ready for polishing
Steve has been working like a demon to catch-up as he had a few delays before he could start.
Now though he’s ready to begin French polishing so we’re in the home straight!

First coat of shellac
Steve French polishes his instruments…one of the tasks that takes time and can’t be hurried.

You must be getting terribly excited, Adam. This project is mouth-watering, to say the least! Between the competing rabbit holes of "vintage OM" and "modern nylon", you've probably got more space for your mind to wander than you need, but hey, it's all relatively harmless mental hyperactivity and an intermittent source of great joy, so good on you!
In a sense one could say that the "crossover" guitar segment offers the greatest amount of freedom for the player and designer. A hybrid by nature, this type of guitar can borrow elements from a much broader range of building techniques than those commonly referenced in the strictly nylon or steel-string traditions. I'd never given the idea of having a nylon in the arsenal much thought until a couple of years ago. Listening to Will McNicol's pieces composed for and performed on nylon has led me to believe that a crossover instrument might be a useful addition to my arsenal. I am eager to hear how all this works out for you. Grist to my mill, as it were.

I couldn’t bear the idea of a rectangular classical bridge or one of those “fruity” headstocks. And the hugely wide nut and slablike fingerboard just made it unplayable for me. It was a combination of Sönke Meinen and Jule Malischke that made me push the button and finally get one.

I have been following you build with interest as well (too few non steel string flattop builds in my opinion). I own both a classical and a “nylon hybrid” guitar as well. I find that I reach for my nylon hybrid 8 out of 10 times over my classical guitar, not because it is a better guitar but because it is more fun for me to play with the style of music that I play and due to its narrower nut width and cutaway for upper fretboard access.

The polishing is finished
The French polishing is now finished and I think you’ll agree that this is looking pretty lovely.
Just needs nut/saddle, bridge, tuners & a set-up and we should be good to go!
