Used to hate Engelmann after I tried a Taylor with it. Engelmann forever! Engelmann the holy grail!

If I could vote for "Whatever Sounds Best", that is what I would vote for. I think there's so much variability that it's tough to make generalizations. I think there's some awesome Sitka out there, just as there is awesome European. I ended up voting Adi because most of my guitars happen to have Adi and in a vacuum, that is the top I would select. But the reality is that if a guitar has a "you know the species" top and sounds good, that is all that matters to me!

I found myself in a similar spot, where I was heavy on Adi tops. Three recent guitars are Sitka (2) and Engelmann (1), which helped to re-balance the top assortment. Likewise, I was heavy with Rosewood and light on Mahogany, so I've worked to re-balance my body woods, as well. My guitar is better balanced now.

Sitka Spruce - I may prefer cedar sometimes but overall if I only had a single acoustic it would have a Sitka top.

Do you mean until you tried a Taylor with it?? My Taylor has an Engelmann top and it sounds sorta punchy like the Sitka guitars I've have had but with more overtones. It has hit a sweet spot with me. |

I’m one who believes I can usually hear a difference between Sitka and Adi. I love great Adi but voted for Sitka because the Adi has to be good or at least well crafted and too often it’s not. I find Sitka more consistently delivers what I like to hear.

All right, who are the 2 characters who voted "Laminate"?
For me, I flatpick a lot and play a fair bit of acoustic rock, blues, etc. Anything works great I'm sure, I've liked the Red Spruce guitars I've had the most. I can't say for sure it's the top wood, but I definitely like red spruce! |

Two years ago my answer would have been Sitka. But now it's Adi by a country mile for the power, headroom, and note 'thickness'.

Any type of Spruce will do fine.

My taste is trending towards Sitka lately after being focused more on Adi. The reason is playing feel. As my preferences have developed I sold a number of Adi-topped guitars that sounded great but played on the stiff side-even to my fretting hand. Some great sounding guitars went away due to perceived stiffness-D-18A '37, OM-18A, CEO-7 (my buddy's CEO was more supple than mine, dangit!), a SCGC OM cutaway. But of course the build makes a huge difference. I still have two Adi topped that are favorites that play supple and take full advantage of Adi-attributes...my J-45TV and OM-28A.
