One of the things a direct box does is convert the unbalanced instrument level signal into a balanced signal, which is what a mic input expects to see. This is a fact and what I said.

You're right, if it's an external, standalone DI box that plugs into a mic input. Error of omission on my part. DI's (aka instrument inputs) built into interfaces, channels strips and mic pre's don't do that. Point being, for anyone else following this thread, that the innards of all the gear we use are unbalanced.
