Default Julian Gaffney Modified Dreadnought - Cocobolo / Sitka for TNAG London

Gentlemen,

I'd like to share an extremely exciting build with you from current Somogyi apprentice Julian Gaffney!

Julian and I have been in touch for a while now and we're very happy to have been appointed his representatives here in Europe. Given Julian's background it made sense that one of the first guitars we ordered from him was a modified Dreadnought. The choice of woods were Julian's in this instance as he has been looking forward to using this combination for a while...

Here's the regulation wood shot. Note also the certificate of commendation in the background!

who could resist...

Julian has been using a lot of Sitka during his time with Ervin (understandably) and had a particular set that he'd been keeping for a special occasion. This will be the first MD I've played in this combination so I'm looking forward to seeing how the immediate and powerful sitka attack interacts with the beautiful "reverb-y" quality of cocobolo.

Here's the soundboard featuring Julian's elegant take on the Somogyi segmented rosette.

It's quite a process!

Obviously there'll be no bracing pics in this thread so we'll go straight to the closed box.

Julian's intricate inlay work is repeated in the block position markers

and headstock...

Next up we'll see the guitar under its french polish!

Hi Michael,

I moved this to the Custom Section -- I hope this is what you intended.

Beautiful guitar work! I would love to hear what that sounds like once it becomes a complete guitar. Maybe you could demonstrate it for us.

- Glenn

Thank you Glen!

Yes I'd got distracted by the discussion on folk music by my friend Silly Moustache and ended up posting in general rather than the custom shop...

I will be demoing this and another MD from Julian later this week if all goes according to plan!

My goodness, there are getting to be quite a few Somogyi luthiers in the world. That's a good thing. Julian's sense of aesthetic, as with most of Ervin's pupils, seems to be top notch. Really looking forward to hear you play it soon.

absolutely breathtaking I had a chance to meet Julian and play a few of his guitars at Woodstock. He was so knowledgeable and so great to talk to. And of course, he builds amazing guitars!

This is so beautiful. I especially love Julian's headstock shape and features. The segmented rose is pretty awesome too!

To my mind, guitars are big enough already; I'd be sawing the end of that off!

Given that, I've no doubt it will sound fabulous given Mr. Gaffney's pedigree.

What did he do to, "make Ervin Somogyi lose it"? Is that an easy thing to do?!

Cheers,
Steve

Ervin's workshop has bred some extraordinary talent! I have every confidence that Julian's work will prove every bit as popular when he sets up his own workshop later this year.

He does indeed! Julian is a cool guy with a solid background in building (Bryan Galloup school and Sadowsky) before he went to Oakland

Julian has an extremely developed sense of line and his work reflects this.
