Default Gordon Lightfoot documentary

I watched this Amazon hosted special tonight with great interest.

This may be old news to many of you, but if you haven’t seen it, I recommend it. It really highlights his importance as a songwriter and the impact his music has had through the years.

At the time it was filmed, he was still performing...don’t know if he still is or not.

Anyway, just wanted to mention this.

I believe he is still alive he’s 82 years old. That was a really really good documentary on his career.

I saw that too...really good documentary. Interesting that Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell all came from the same town.

Yeah, they should collect water from that town and bottle it for sale in music stores.

Really enjoyed this documentary and prompted me to learn a couple more of his songs. He is also scheduled to perform in nearby Rochester NY in June 2021. Fingers crossed, I’ll be there

Update: Rolling Stone and No Depression both reported that his mgt announced KK has retired from screen and stage. His son will manage his label, and said several projects are in the works.

Edit: oops! Since I cant delete, I’ll offer my apologies for this misplaced comment, although I bet theres a lot of cross-over fandom between these two legendary singer/songwriters.

Being my age (71) I've been aware of Gordon Lightfoot for as long as I can remember...I always considered myself a fan, especially of his output from 1970 thru the mid late 70's...but haven't paid much mind since that time...

So, I was surprised when it took me several attempts over a week or so to get thru this documentary...I also realized that I didn't care much for the vast majority of his music other than the brief spell I've mentioned...

I found most of the music mundane and tedious, and had to start and stop my way thru the broadcast over several attempts at viewing...

As said, I was really surprised at the effect the documentary had on my long held impressions of Gordon Lightfoot...

Definitely one of those "each to his own" things...all the usual disclaimers...

It isn't unusual for us to have a favorite period in any composer's work. I'm a big fan of early Jimmy Buffet. Some of the later stuff... not so much. But every artist has to evolve.

My guess is KK refers to Kris Kristofferson.

I also like Buffet and prefer his early stuff over the later stuff. It's been all downhill since Come Monday Showing my age!

Yep...from a press release about a week ago...

Kris Kristofferson quietly announced his retirement via a clause buried in a press release detailing the future management of the songwriter’s estate. “In addition, in the wake of his father’s retirement in 2020,” it read, “Kristofferson’s son John steps in to oversee all of the family’s business.” Kristofferson’s spokesperson confirmed the Country Music Hall of Fame member’s retirement from touring, recording, and acting.

I agree that Gord's prime was from 1970, when the LP "If You Could Read my Mind" was released to 1976 when "Summertime Dream" came out.
Every record he made during that period was excellent, including his masterpiece "Sundown". He made a few good records after that, such as "Dream Street Rose" and "Shadows", but his peak years for songwriting and recording were 1970-76. After that, I think he tried to shift from a folk-oriented sound to more of a pop-oriented sound and it wasn't as successful.

I watched the documentary last Spring and I really enjoyed it. And if you want to learn about the art of songwriting, learn a few of his classics.

I watched that a few weeks ago. I was a big fan in the 1969-74 era, especially the way the guitars sounded. I think "If You Could Read My Mind" is one of the best pieces of songwriting ever. Someone on this forum recommended a link to the Rick Beato analysis of this song on YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X33Y...rt_radio=1&t=9,

The thing I got out of the documentary, was the disappointing feeling that no matter how personal and poignant the music was, it was still a business even then, and it was all about selling records. And these musicians weren't exactly heroes. Got the same feeling from the CSN&Y documentary.
