Set in the Yorkshire countryside (which is stunning) in the 30's with three veterinarians (tending to mostly farm animals) and a housekeeper. This is the newer version- I've never seen the original from 1978. 3 seasons are out, and the 4th season starts in January.

I watched every episode in the original and bought all his books. Tried watching the new version and quit. Just my opinion but far inferior to the original.

Now I've completed the pair 1491 and 1493. Wow do I recommend them and especially for those who live in the Americas and Europe.

They start post last ice age and are mostly about all that was and changed with Columbus and the "new world" but not your standard sort of history book. They were especially great for having so much not yet known in my k-12 days, and the simplified plus brief version of most of that history you get in in the k-12 education.

Read 1491 first.

I just got hooked on “The Bear” on Hulu.

A classically trained chef and James Beard Award winner returns back to his family’s restaurant in Chicago after his brother commits suicide. The place is decrepit and deep in debt. Carmy takes it upon himself to get the place back on its feet and then some.

What I found interesting is that the acting and directing are fabulous. I immediately cared about the characters and hoped for their success. I just watched the first four episodes today.

It’s now in its third season.

Haven't seen it yet, but I will. The actor who plays Carmy was incredible in the American version of Shameless. Thanks for recommending it.

My wife and I have gone back to watch Wolf Hall for about the 4th time. Such an interesting series, though very sobering. Terrific acting, we think.

After reading the Sue Davidson Lowe book on Alfred Stieglitz I wanted to watch this movie again.

Dark Winds on Netflix. If you've read the Tony Hillerman books, right off the bat you're going to start seeing the plot line and the character development go in a whole different direction. So if you are the kind that can't get past it if the show does not reflect the book, you're not going to like it. But if you can just let the book go and enjoy the story in front of you, it's pretty good.

That sounds like something we would enjoy.

As an aside, I tried reading Wolf Hall, the first book in the series, last year. I very rarely give up on a book, but I had to admit defeat with this one - the dialogue was almost impossible to follow. I could not get into it at all.

Hi David,

My wife and I tried to read the first Wolf Hall book out loud to each other and we had to give up on it, too, and for the same reason you've noted. We both read the books separately, in our heads, and they were a challenge to stay with. But as you note, the dialogue can be very hard to make sense of.

The BBC series is highly engaging, beautifully we done, I think.

I'm currently enjoying Netflix's KAOS, though I am not sure how people would find it if you didn't know your Greek mythology. It loses its way at times (chiefly when Hera is about), but I am sticking with it.
